Wendy,
I'm sorry my rating is late for your exceptional work.
I identify with many of your points. I'm 64 and have been a not-quiter. It's never too late though.
Your layout is supreme, and you express your points with a friendly acumen.
Good luck with all your writing, Wendy
Blessings,
Cindy

    Hi Cindy,
Thank you so much for the Exceptional rating. It is an honour for me to receive this and I appreciate it.
No, it?s never too late. I have started writing more in the last eighteen months since joining FS. (I?m now 71). Before it was very infrequent.

Well, you managed to win the contest! Congratulations! No not-quiting there then! But I did like this poem, because I think a lot of us writers are prone to self-doubt, looking at others' work and feeling we've got a way to go. The end was particularly good, about not needing to be THE best, but instead being OUR best.

Thank you. Yes, or is not necessary or even healthy to want to be THE best. Self acceptance and just trying to do OUR best will bring satisfaction. I appreciate your thoughtful review!

The paintings were possibly painted by an artist who was famous (perhaps). Modern art displays are not always gorgeous paintings, and they will go for the most expensive price or cost there is...congratulations on your first-place entry.

Thank you so much. I appreciate your thoughts and congratulations. Yes, if one is famous one can get away with a lot more.

Hahaha. I'm trying to get rich by selling bottled air. Lol. I don't know how some can get away with what they get paid for putting "nothing" on a canvas. That's ridiculous. Or with just dots, lines and splashes. I'd love making money by making messes. Haha. Great piece for the contest, Wendy. Let me go ahead and say congrats on the win. Thanks for the chuckle. Have yourself a fantastic rest of your weekend.

This post stands out enough from all the others to to earn a Six. So, at least in this case, you are not a "not-quiter" as you define that term. I enjoyed reading it.

In the early 1960s, I had occasion to visit an art museum in New York City. On the ground floor, in their largest room, they displayed a huge canvas -- at least twenty feet wide and ten feet high -- entirely a shade of light purple absolutely the same from one end to the other. The price was over a hundred thousand dollars (close to a million in today's dollars). I was amazed that anyone would want it, but at least it was better than a shade of white.

Superb.

Thank you so much for your super review. I appreciate your great words and also the six stars. (It?s a bit crazy that people can make so much money with that sort of non-effort. Why people would acknowledge that I don?t know. To me they have achieved "nothing at all"!
    Thank you again.

You are most welcome, Wendy. While it must have taken some effort by the artist to get the purple to look so uniform all across that huge canvas, the three white ones you saw should have been laughed at. Anyone can paint a wall white with a roller, but you could not buy a can of that particular purple anywhere.

Do you know that the Catholic Church owns a tremendous amount of fine art, but NONE of it is abstract? Their reasoning is that pictorial art will always have value, but abstract art will not because what it is supposed to represent cannot be discerned as culture evolves over time.

Pablo Picasso's father was a master at pictorial panting, and taught Pablo all he knew. One day Pablo painted something so well that his father put down his brush and never painted again. However, no paintings by either of them sold well, and Pablo was increasingly depressed that all their effort was not bringing in much. Pablo got so irritated that he began painting in the style for which he became famous and wealthy. He secretly laughed at the buyers ever after. He hated his own work, but decided that if such nonsense was what the public wanted, they deserved what they got, and he would never be poor again.

Empty-minded people, with zero skills of their own, buy such things in order to feel superior to others for seeing value where no one else does. Ask them what that value is, and all they can answer is that if you can't see the value, you would not understand an explanation (which they cannot give because there is none). (Sounds like what many politicians say about their culture-destroying agenda, doesn't it? They won't explain either.)

No one (other than God) can achieve perfection every time, and few can even once. Making the effort to improve is what matters, and YOU DO. -- Mike

The rhyming is great, and the story certainly lived up to the subject of the contest. On my first read, I thought 'quiter(s)' was misspelled and should have been 'quitters', until after the break; then it all made sense and was 'quite' enjoyable. Good job, and good luck in the contest... ...ec

Thanks so much. I hoped people would understand my made up word, so I tried to emphasise "not quite" throughout. Thanks too for your kind wishes. I appreciate your time and thoughtful review.

"Not quite the best" is what many of us can claim to be, whether we're trying to paint, write, or play a musical instrument. I enjoyed your self-mocking humor here. Rod

You're a champion at lots of things! Mothering, teaching, as well as writing and witnessing! I am glad to be a "not quiter" as you say. It's God Who uses our efforts and we can leave it to Him.
Hope you do well in the contest!

Thank you very much Helen! Yes, as long as we are using our gifts for Him it really doesn?t matter where we rank in the eyes of the world. We don?t need to compare ourselves with others or desire fame.

It's absolutely amazing how you were able to capture so many of my thoughts about writing, and putting them in a poem. I never thought about writing until three years ago and joined this site two years ago. I marvel at some of the literary talent demonstrated here, but you made it sound okay to not be those writers. I'll keep trying to be my best. Thank you. Best wishes in the contest.

Ah that is so great. I?ve only started really in the last eighteen months since I?ve been in this site. Before that very little. I am glad you enjoyed my piece - and it really doesn?t matter if we don?t reach the top so long as we are enjoying doing our personal best.
Thanks so much for your words of encouragement!
