Ode to Hee Haw ~ BR549

I found that hillbilly slang is easier to sing than read!

Hahaha. . I love your poem. It's so funny and well written. I like the slang southern accent. I think the presentation is beautiful.

This piece is really funny and I'm sure easier to sing or read than it is to write. I remember Hee Haw with Roy Clark and Minnie Pearl. I grew up in the city laughing at the characters on the show and wondered if people in the country really acted like the Hee Haw cast. Your poem tells a funny story in true Hee Haw style.

You are so sweet, and I really appreciate it more than you can know.
My poem was disqualified from the contest because they thought it I wasn't paying tribute to the show and that it was about a random guy not paying his taxes, winning the lottery, etc.. I wrote back and explained that these were not random, that they were actual skits on the show, but I never heard back.
I was disappointed and going to quit, but you guys are all such good friends now, I would miss writing, chatting and reviewing with so many like you.
And besides they truly have a hard job trying to make sure everything is handled legitimately that there's bound to be a mistake made occasionally.
So you made me feel so good when you said in true hee haw fashion; in fact you made my week. Thank you my friend, as your kind review and comments meant so much!

Hi Debi, I'm sorry to hear the committee disqualified your poem. I didn't know they ever did that. I thought you just never heard from them if you didn't win (like happened to me many times). Once again, I enjoyed your funny story/poem and would love to read more.

I was raised by my grandparents--they love it and country music. I liked the poem and thought you did a good job with the dialogue. I miss the silliness of television. It used to be fun. Now, half the country laughs, while the other half is offended.

Oh my goodness, you nailed it with that last sentence! It seems so many are just looking for something to be offended by or to protest. At least that's how bad it's been here in MN since the Summer of 2020........
Thank you so much for your very kind review and comments.
    They are so appreciated!

Thanks for sharing this here! It's really funny! This reminded me of sitting with my grandmother while she watched Hee Haw. She laughed, and that made me laugh.

Jessi, thank you for the very nice review. I can't believe you're old enough to remember that show, even as a little girl. My husband really liked it so I thought I could enhance his interest in poetry, as he loved the saying BR549, but also loved the silly hick skits about paying taxes and winning money, etc..
Anyway, thanks again for your kind comments.

I'm 39, but I watched it with my grandmother in reruns a couple of years ago.

You are still a youngster Jessi! Lol, Actually you are the same age as my youngest daughter., so it's no wonder I felt close to you from the start. Thanks again Jessi!

"Ode to Hee-Haw" is a funny poem in an uneducated rural dialect in which the narrator answers all the financial challenges his life faces by referring them to his license plate number, apparently the only identifying number he knows for himself. All of the poem's rhymes, misspellings, and jokes work to create a rural character from the yesterday of America. I would change "overgrown ashtray" to 'filled up' or 'piled high.'
It's a long time since I watched "Hee-Haw," but I do remember the show having funny episodes based on rural dialect set in incongruous circumstances.

Thanks Frank, it makes me feel better because I know you and the others got that it was a tribute to all the skits on Hee Haw. I was disqualified because they said it was about taxes and lottery, not about the show.
I don't mean any disrespect but you would have to see the show to understand that. I'm pretty bummed about it.
However I thank you for your awesome review!

Haha or is it He Haw, He Haw? I enjoyed your fun ode, Mystery Author.
No offense taken by me. Your words were fun to read. I could
follow along easily. You did a good job with the slang. The
picture is perfect, too. Thanks for the notes.
Best wishes, Jan

Thank you so much Jan for the kind and fun review. It is scary trying something new, but so thankful I tried. Lol, my poetry finally did get a little attention from my husband. Thank you Jan, as you gave me the gift a smile right back!

It was entertaining enough, but I am now tormented by the question of what is the significance of BR549? Is it a code of some sort? I will not rest until I know. I have tried to use every technique I can think of, but nothing seems to work. Oh well, I guess I will have to keep at it.

Nomi, You needn't try any longer, because it was the phone # of the less than honest, used car salesman, Junior Samples. He always held up a sign at the end of his skit, that had that number on it, while he said "for the best used car deals, call BR549." (or something on that order)

LOL!!! You are very creative and clever with this one my friend.
I used to watch Hee Haw too and it was always fun. You could laugh and just be silly for awhile. Thank you for the great reminder of another time.

Well, I'll be durned. That was one of my all time favorites. I bet I've used the old "BR549" a million times (maybe half a million). I still watch the reruns when they are on.

That's so funny that you use BR549 too. My youngest grandson pretends he's a cop & plays that he pulls me over in my chair. He'll ask for my license and will repeat that phrase, as if that's what my pretend license # is.
Thanks for the great review and fun comme

Thank you so very much for the awesome and fun review of my poem.
Being from MN, we get teased with words like, "you betcha, ya sure and Ole and Lena jokes. Here in Mineesoda, we too have heard it all."
You are a good sport and I hope everyone realizes that the only ones I was making fun of was the show and their silly humor.
