Wow! You saved a life with your Swiss army knife! That's great. Thank you for sharing this story here. You can't make up stuff like this. Keep up the good work.

It was certainly a bizarre situation, but so pleased the tortoise was OK afterwards.

This is great story. What a kind deed you did for the little animal. Those Swiss Army knives do have an amazing selection of instruments. I loved the story but the best laugh came from your notes with the grateful turtle peed on you.

Thanks for your lovely review comments, Beth.
(My story got disqualified because it was a true story in a flash fiction contest.)

My husband always has his SwissArmy knife for cutting and other emergency uses. But this is a first. I enjoyed the story. Maybe the peeing was his thank you!
Good luck in the contest
Best regards
Mary

Too bad. It was a good entry.

What a fascinating story. Poor tortoise - but just as well you were able to help. What a unique life experience! Well told. I hope your story does well in the 75 word flash.

Lucky tortoise we came along. We were on motorbikes and because my friend was interested in them he noticed it and we stopped to watch it and saw its problem.

Wow fascinating story. This is just a suggestion, but for this kind of competition I think it might be better to focus on the tick and the tortoise because that's where the imagery and action is. Then you could add something at the end like "When dad gave me the Swiss Army knife neither of us ever imagined it would be used for something like this."

Your comments made me revisit my story for a rethink. I just changed the position of one sentence but was happy with the rest of it... but I appreciate your thoughtful review.

Wonderful story and an excellent entry. So this came to mind. What if your companion had been an expert on arachnids? Would you have beheaded the turtle to save the tick?
It was great. Good luck with the contest!
Cheers,
John

Hahaha... now there's a dilemma, although I think being an expert on something doesn't necessarily make the expert side with the bad guy. (Okay, new moral dilemma - who gets to decide who the bad guy is in the animal kingdom.)

I'll take shot. All spiders (and cousins) are bad. Done.

Hmmmm.... we might get overrun with insects without them though.
Modification: "All spiders (and cousins) are bad if they are anywhere near you or me."

Or turtle necks.

ha.

Truth is story helps to portray feelings.
I am grateful you were able to use the tool for good.
God's creatures are our responsibility.
So sad how they are looked at as mere resources.
My step mom had a desert tortoise in Arizona and will probably out live her.
Turtles are normally associated with wisdom.
Great story.

Thanks for your comments. I totally agree with you that we must take care of God's creatures. Other people thought we were mad to help the tortoise, but it might have died otherwise.
