I think I know why you wrote this (and I could be wrong), and I think you are absolutely right. There are all kinds of family. Thank you for sharing and saying what other people might not dare to say. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jessi, your thoughtful review is very astute. I appreciate your insight, and yes, I see a wide range of family compositions in life, and they are all valid and to be celebrated. Many thanks!

You've included all sorts of possibilities of family members, from in-laws to pets, but your message is clear. The family is a unit to be respected, nurtured and loved. Your final statement is most meaningful. "The family consists of those closest to the heart." Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you very much. You are right - that's exactly what I wanted to convey. Not everyone has a traditional family, and some have an unhappy family background so others or pets become family. I like your thoughtful review very much! Appreciated.

Wow you really did address all kinds of families in your poem. I would have never thought to do that. I just wrote a poem abouty family. Wonderful job!

This poem, Reality, broadens the definition of family with which I'm sure we can all agree. Our blood family, work family, church family, team family, and everyone else family.

Yes, that was my idea. Not necessarily the typical stereotype of a family. Some people have a church family much closer in heart than their physical family. So many other contexts too. Thanks so much for your thoughtful review.

This was a well crafted poem. Your poem relays the fact that family don't always have to be blood relatives. I liked the consistent rhyming scheme throughout the poem. Your picture compliments the poem very well. Nice job.

'Reality' is a great title and your closing sentence is the loving person's response to those who categorise a family along different lines. Everything you have written in the middle shows the value of inclusivity rather than making demarcations based on arbitrary issues.
It provides a nice follow-up to an adoption/fostering story.

Thank you very much. Yes, that was the plan, inclusivity - and to show the huge variety in family compositions apart from the stereotypical biological family. So glad you enjoyed this one.

Family is a wonderful word which conveys a sense of belonging. To be in the family of God means to be accepted for who we are: loved, cherished, celebrated, and fully forgiven.

Yes - and that is a perfect extension. His family is indeed a mixed bunch and we are all able to share the blessings of His adoption.

I love that you included all types of families in your poem. My husband and I are often asked when we plan to start our family, and I often think, "We are already a family."
I agree that those with no biological relatives are not without family--that friends and neighbors and even colleagues and classmates can act as family. I've heard it said before that friends are the family we choose, and that is a beautiful sentiment.
Your final stanza hit the nail on the head. This poem was well thought. Kudos! I look forward to reading more from you.

So many of your written thoughts strike notes like the father who played music by ear. Quite inciteful and good advice for others who might want to continue the fight of getting along.

Thank you for reviewing. Yes, not all families are happy. I appreciate your thoughts.

Wendy,
Your poem touches the reader in many ways: The person with a pet and no family of her own, except siblings, the "outlaws," those who may be grudgingly included in a family structure, etc. You use such eloquent words to describe what a family should be.
I consider Fanstory a loving branch of family; it has a lot softer tone and more compassion than Facebook.
Good luck with all your writing, Wendy.
Good luck in this contest.
Blessings,
Cindy
