Loved the story and I know it will do very well in the contest. My granddaughter began asking for a horse on her 3rd birthday; her parents live in the city! They did manage some riding lessons and every time she had the opportunity she visited ranches, people who had horses, etc. Today she lives in Guysville, Ohio and owns several horses. She gives riding lessons and hosts riding sessions for challenged persons, both children and adults. Sometimes we just know what we want! Sorry to hear about your friend. Good story and good luck. ann

Thanks so much for your lovely comments, Ann. And for sharing your granddaughter?s amazing story. She must have a compassionate heart working with challenged children and adults but I bet they love their horse-riding and I bet she finds it very fulfilling too. As you say sometimes one just knows.

Wonderful job on your story. Good luck and best wishes. I did my best too with nothing to show for it. Keep smiling, and have a wonderful day. Enjoy the little things

Thank you very much Pookietoo, You have a kind and loving nature. In stories I just like to develop one main idea with no unnecessary detail, and it seems to work. I'm sure your writing will develop well, so never give up!

Wow! Wendy, you were so lucky to hang on... for dear life! You must have been a pretty good rider, actually. Most young girls, or boys (for that matter), would have landed rolling on the ground. But you managed to hold on until you were back at the farm. But I'll bet you didn't take Stumpy for any more rides.
It reminded me of the time we took the Youth Group from church on an overnight excursion... via horseback. My horse's name was Darlin', and little did I know how many times I would be hollering "Whoa, Darlin'!!!" She wanted to be rid of me as much as Stumpy wanted to be rid of you. I saw my life flash before my eyes as I (somehow) managed to stay in the saddle. I won't ever play "cowboy" again!
Nicely penned for the Short Story contest! Good Luck!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Thanks so much for your super review! No, I never rode Stumpy again, lol. I think in retrospect God must have sent an angel to help me. No idea how I managed to stay on! I see you understand perfectly from your own experience! You had your Darlin for the return trip from camp as well?! At least I only had Stumpy for an hour!

well, Wendy, you had quite an experience and kudos to you for staying on! You should have gotten a blue ribbon for that. I did keep thinking you were going to say that upon dismounting you found out that a bur or something had gotten under his saddle or some such thing. You mean he was just ornery for no reason?
Also, I'm sorry about you friend. That is so sad.
Best wishes,
Katharine

Hi Katharine, thank you for your super review. No, I never found out any reason for the way he acted. The owner said he had changed his personality after his accident jumping the fence and I suppose that?s possible, although I did wonder why a race horse would try to jump a fence if he was well cared for and happy with his training. Who knows?!

As a breeder and trainer of thoroughbreds for over 40 years, I have come across all kinds of horses. Many have quarks, like us humans, in their personalities and dispositions. Fun story, as yours always are. But sad note of the fifteen-year old. Thanks for sharing.

This is a really good story with a totally believable knowledge of what a horse can do. Like you, I loved horses when we moved to the country. Don't like them anymore. I'm not at all surprised that you didn't go riding again.

Thanks so much Carol. I'm sure most horses are fine, but there is always the one that for some unknown reason is ill-tempered and unpredictable. I didn't really have enough experience to be given such a horse. It was very scary.

I had one slam me into a building, throw me and then turn and stomp me. Another took me cross country jumping ditches. My sister was always asking me to hold her horse while she went to the bathroom and Mr. Ed would sneakily step on my foot and would get off my foot when my sister showed up. I don't like horses.

Oh those are indeed terrible experiences! Wow, glad you weren't killed - I understand why you don't like them.

This was a riveting story, Wendy. It started out so good - you got to learn how to ride a horse. Why would those stable boys give Stumpy to you? I could feel your fear. I'm glad you survived and I'm so sorry to hear about your friend.

Thank you for reviewing, Judy. Safety measures weren't really much thought about then. Maybe Stumpy was the only one left to be hired out that day. But yes, it was scary!

This was an incredible story of horseback riding. That was definitely a life-threatening experience which is proven by your notes which tell of your friend's tragic death. Tennis seems a bit safer than riding crazy horses.

Stumpy certainly had a mind of his own here as he was awkward and probably never won a race in his life! He he he, you did make me smile with this story full of adventure Wendy, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Dang, I wasn't expecting the ending of your author notes. I'm a city girl. Animals are fun but they stink and they're so much bigger than me. I'm sorry about your friend, and I'm sorry Stumpy treated you that way. I'm glad you found something else.

Thanks so much for your super review. Animals can smell if they?re not well cared for, but now I?ve changed my affections towards a little dog. So much love. I never had a dog till I retired, so it?s still pretty new to me. Very enriching.
