I really enjoyed reading this. It plucked at my heartstrings and brought me back to all of the pups I have owned. It is never easy, but it is always worth it in the end. Well written and exudes a warmth and love. You must be a special person and I am glad you and Pup found each other.

This Puppy Day story, My Last Dog, is a neat tale of giving a rescue puppy one more chance to live. What a great match up for all concerned. Nice story.

Tears in eyes, as I read this story, prompting one of my own about my ex-husband and his "last dog" that he adamantly refused to allow to our family of three cast-offs I had brought into our home. There was no question that he would have custody of "Murphy", our Shih tzu we gained because a breeder needed their secret reject taken away because his testicles were inside instead of outside. He has always been a baby, never growing up, just aging along side his best friend and daddy.
A touching, well written tribute to your last dog.

What a sweet story! But I think this was supposed to be a poetry contest. Your story is one many can relate to because we do get so attached to our pups. Hope your entry will still count even though it's prose.

Thank you. The contest stated poem or short story. If you check the entries you will find that most of them are in the prose form. The contest is being voted on at this time and my story is there. Hugs

You have warmed my heart here. My husband and I have had many cats and dogs over the years. It was a wise decision to adopt Pup and I can see the cats and Pup playing together. This is a wonderful dog story and this canine stole your heart.

Thank you for reading and the six stars. I have a soft spot for abused animals. I often rescued starved and abused horses too. With the dairy farm, we had plenty of feed for extra animals. Pup is my best friend and I will miss her when she is gone. Hugs

Dogs are a family's best friend. They don't lie or talk back to a person. I really like your story because I also have said "That's my last dog." Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I hope Pup is truly my last dog. At 76 there is a very good chance a new pup would outlive me. I just hope to stick around until all the animals I have live out their lives. Hugs.

I enjoyed reading your story, you have told it well. I can just see you as he put that dog in your arms, and your soft heart would not let you turn him away. I am glad you have him and the cats for company.

Thank you. Pup is a her not a him. She is the love of my life and I'm so glad to have her. I was angry at Gordon at first but he knew what he was doing. Gordon is still a practicing vet and he is older than me. Hugs

You are welcome. Sorry I said him instead of her.

Oh, my goodness. I can't believe you wrote this. I took the death of my dog Gallow so hard, I've never owned another dog. So, I know exactly how you feel. But I'm glad you took Pup in. Darn it! I think I would have too. :))

Thank you. Yes, I didn't want to go through that again but I guess I will before too many more years. Pup is 12 and starting to show her age. Hugs.

This is the sweetest story. So sad, how some people treat these poor animals. Then, if the animal turns on them, they can't believe it and don't understand what happened. I think it is admirable of you to take in these animals. When my husband was alive, the same thing would happen to us. Every stray that someone picked up, they brought directly to my husband at work.

Thank you for reading and the six stars. It is sad how some treat animals and still call theirselves human. I have seen some really bad situations after being on the farm for 30 years. Hugs.
