Ciao!

I'm not sure if I got the message that you wanted to convey but here is what i perceived.

Once in the African savannah , the coming of age trial (when a teen finally is considered by the tribe an adult) consisted in hunting and killing a lion with a spear and shield.

The teen had to count on his own resources, skills, intelligence, quick thinking and courage to stay alive and slay a lion, a fierce predator.

When I was a teen to prove I was BIG to my so called friends who had challenged me to steal something from a department store instead of refusing, I nicked a leather belt.

The goal was not to be seen or caught, which I managed. I was about 13. I was still really naive.

Today too many teens especially from poor backgrounds , the ghetto , to prove themselves go rob at gun point or do something horrible like the person that shot the guy dead.. because killing someone sadly gets you more respect and gives you more status.

Of course, killing a (disarmed )person is no proof that you are mature.

Coming of age involved psychological and emotional maturity.

Like in The Mockingbird. Scout and Jem judge Boo as a nutter because that's what the folks in town said of him .. but when they finally meet and interact with him , they understand why he preferred to hide at home, they finally make their own opinion about him.

One of my favourite coming of age movies is the cult film " Rebel Without a Cause ". Middle /class teens to prove themselves risk their lives taking part in drag races ..

Buz , head of the local school gang confronts and challenges the new comer Jimmy who hates to be called a chicken and excepts to demonstrate to everyone he is a MAN. The epilogue is tragic.

Alternative take : the guy instead of being a dick head , could have just let the kid enjoy his dip and then send him on his way.

Or was the kid in the water the lure?
