War is a truly terrible thing, to say the least. This was a beautiful tribute to your father's brother and all those who lost their lives. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes.

Wow! What a poignant and heartfelt piece. I teared up when I read This...I hate war, too and it does leave a lot of scarring. This was a very moving poem...You should be very proud of your dad and his brother.

True or not, this is heart-wrenching. It would be such a horrid situation.
Especially, so far from home. Along with being killed in a war. The scene is one, a person would carry in their memory until death. Thank you for awareness of the cold war.

Dolly thank you so much. I felt so sad as I wrote it too. Some are very proud about going to war, but I feel it is just gruesome when the leaders of countries make decisions which so horribly impact the lives of others, and send their young people off to fight. We should just put the leaders in a room with some boxing gloves until they can sort themselves out!

Exceptional story my friend! The subject is captivating and held my attention throughout the piece and the words ran smoothly and didn't seem forced;-)
Thanks for sharing and many blessings to you and your family!

This is an emotionally touching poem for its simplicity of expression, sincerity, and personal content. It clearly shows the impact of war, grief at the death of a twin brother... the sacrifices necessary but deeply regrettable in theatres of war. I am an Aussie too, so mention of the Rats of Tobruk struck a patriotic chord with me.

Thank you very much for your very thoughtful and understanding review. We children knew nothing about PTSD, but I wish now we had known and could have been more understanding.

PTSD is a difficult psychological issue for both the sufferers and those who wish to help. Those soldiers probably thought they were doing the 'right' thing by keeping their experiences to themselves and protecting family members from the horrors.
reply by the author on 07-Mar-2022
You are exactly right. They saw no need or reason to relive the horrors, and tried to move on the best they could.

I've just returned from Brisbane where my daughter and family now live. I'm sorry to hear about your dad losing his twin brother, and suffering possible PTSD as a result of that conflict. Beautifully written my friend, excellent flow and rhyme, articulate narrative, well done, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy. I appreciate your understanding review. I now believe he had PTSD, but of course during our childhood, no-one knew anything about those conditions. And to us, the war had long since passed, whereas in reality it was only a few years before he got married.
