This story builds well from the drama and hard work compressed in the first paragraph, to the day of freedom and exploration at the amusement park. The setup for the horror ride was nicely draped with caution from the ride attendant. The final reaction a fitting blend of irony and showmanship. Nice.

This really is an excellent story--skillfully written, with a well-detailed, logical plot, believable characters, and plenty of suspense. The end is especially good--the revealing of the attendant's cleverness. I can see why the story won the contest.

I remember when my daughter was young and she went inside a haunted house where the mirrored room (which were supposed to open) remained locked with lights flashing.... By the time, she was rescued, she never went into a haunted house again. The mind puts on the brakes!

Good story...I've never liked dark places...
Both boys knew(,) as they walked away(,) they would ride that fabulous ride again... soon. But they didn't notice the Frankenstein attendant laughing.
