I like your poem - heart felt for the people of Ukraine held at the mercy of Putin without the proper defense promised to them by the U.S. and Britain when they gave up their nuclear defense years ago with the promise that they would be taken care of should Russia attack in the future. And, here in 2021 and for over a year Russia amassed their troops and tanks on the Ukraine border while, unlike Trump, Biden chose to do nothing, (like Chamberlain, appeased) and continued to do nothing giving Russia the green light to invade. Just like in Afghanistan lives were lost, and now thousands of lives- all totally avoidable with peace through strength by the USA.
May God bless the people of Ukraine and the world should this lead to a Nuclear WW 3. Thank you for writing about this.

Thanks, AP. The leadership we have in our country is weak. I'll say no more, although I would like to.

Super job with your sonnet, Paul! And you made it even more poignant by ending with a question in your final couplet. We are all praying that Putin will be stopped. The Russian people don't want this war. They have relatives in Ukraine. None of this makes any sense at all. Let's keep praying. Best wishes in the contest!

Thanks, Helen. I am watching this war so much on television, that I am not doing much writing.
-
Watch only if you're praying at the same time or else, it will be too depressing.

What a very sorrowful and poignant sonnet, Paul, summing up so succinctly what most of us are thinking at the moment. Beautifully and passionately written, I share your wishes for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Thanks, PK. It sickens me to see all the devastation on the television.

Hello from a fellow math teacher! Your poem is well written with a relevant and universal message. The rhymes are natural, and the poem flows nicely. I especially like the line, While NATO's looking on from distant shores. This visual representation hits my heart- how detached the rest of the world is from those who are in the country who are forced to be brave. Well done!

Thanks, Colleen. With a name like that, is it possible that you are Irish?

I do have some Irish ancestry! My mom studies our ancestry and she has found Irish, German, French, English, and more. :)

A very powerful Sonnet about the fight for their freedom by the peoples of Ukraine. Your ending couplet is particularly, both frightening and emotional Paul. Good luck in the contest.

A beautifully written sonnet. There is some indication that even the simple Russian soldier was lied to, they just thought these manoeuvres were purely military, but they never expected to be met with such fierce opposition, Ukrainians value their democratic freedom. Superbly written Paul, magnificent job, blessings Roy

Excellent entry for the Sonnet Poetry Contest. I couldn't agree with you more. I pray for Ukrainians and Russians too, not Putin, the regular folk, they don't want the war either.

Thanks, Raul. I'm not looking forward to the ending of this conflict, because it is going to be catastrophic for the Ukrainians unless someone steps up.

Amen my friend. What a great poem about Ukraine's sitution with the evil one that wants to kill them and destroy them. You used great descriptive words and very good words. Ukraine is in my prayers and have been since this happened. Blessings, Teri

Thanks, Teri. I am also praying, but it's going to take more than that. Someone has got to intervene.
