    I was unfortunate but God, through people, helped me. I am what I am today is because of them. Let us try our best to help others less fortunate than us.

that is very good.
I never see the homeless, but then I never go downtown. I don't think we have a big problem here, though, at least I never hear it on the news.

I like the idea of giving them a sandwich. I hesitate to give money because many, not all, are there because of addiction. It's sad, and also complicated. Good luck in the contest.

Your poem and notes point out what can be done to show compassion for their situation. It is easy to make sympathetic noises, but it is actually quite easy to do something that will make a difference - you have itemised several - yet so many turn a blind eye and keep walking or mutter disapprovingly.
