This sixty-word flash fiction story, A Day at the Colosseum, has the required word count and renders an unlikely but funny account of an atypical encounter in that arena.

Ciao poet, you have your second vote.

As soon as I read Colosseo I opened the page.

I wasn't expecting a twilight ending but you won my vote not only because you wrote about the most iconic symbol of Roma but also because you surprised me with the humouristic twist.

It was definitely a blood arena but in all honesty , I love watching series about the Roman Empire and the gore

Watching gladiators fighting is quite ... exhilarating !

Unfortunately, also convicted criminals were killed by gladiators or fed to the lions and other ferocious beasts all in the name of entertainment.

It is popular belief that the first Christians also were fed to lions in the Colloseo but in truth there is no written evidence.

You mention two historical men.

Spiculus, a famous gladiator who won his freedom and Crixus, a slave trained to be a gladiator.

He escaped with Spartacus and became his right hand. Together as rebels they fought the Romans.
Both in separate moments died fighting against them.

You sure offer a lot of interesting historical material in this 60 word dash.

A very engaging theme!

Well ,one day when your kids are big and you have a bit of time remember ?..

? visiting Roma is like leaping back in time ( biggrin)

There is so so much to see the Roman Empire still lives on..

it?s one of the subjects we study at school from age 13 on

I studied the history of architecture and arts for 5 years.

there is much to remember : different styles, artists and their works over the centuries.

Your entry was doing well then others moved up .. it deserved the podium , it was creative/ original.

    Damn it.

    Hi!
I'll take the 3rd place happily - an improvement for me :)

I was once in Rome many years ago when i was just out of high school, Staying in hostels and surviving on beer.
I would really like to visit again as an true adult. The history is just incredible.
And you say there are lots that remains from the Roman Empire era.

Such a magical feeling being around such ancient man made structures.

I guess pretty normal for someone living in Italy but for a Canadian boy, in a country fairly recently colonized, seeing old artifacts like that is amazing!

That's very cool that you studied history of architecture. Such great knowledge to have. I wonder: were the Romans pioneers of their own architecture, or did they borrow style from other cultures?

Thanks for your kind words and great support of my "poetry" :)
I am a work in progress

Oh lord .. I saw wrong . Yeah .. like I said it deserved the podium .

Time I ate more carrots( biggrin)

The Greeks were at their peak before the Romans so yes the Romans borrow lost from the Greeks columns , arches , domes ..

    even their religion/ gods.

The Romans loved Greek culture, art, philosophy etc.

I went to visit the capital when I was 13 my parents took me. ..though I loved all the ancient ruins ,I was far too young ..

I saw Pompei too which is only 2 hours drive away.

I ll go visit once more when all this nightmare is over.

Were you on your own or with friends ?

Did you visit other places in Italy or from Roma did you visit other European countries? You can send me an email with your reply? all in due time , no rush.

Oh I much prefer this ending than having a tattered corpse dragged off. The blood crazed Romans (cap R) might not like it though. Much nicer to go off together for a pint than to kill a drinking buddy. I like your quirky humour.
