What a lovely take on the "prisoner" theme. There are definitely worse things than being prisoner to your love of animals. I have only one cat but, when she stretches out or curls up in my lap, I become her prisoner, refusing to move until she decides she's ready for food or play. Your story is sweet and well told, with a sadly funny ending line that closes it out perfectly.

So, you understand who is master in your house too. LOL I had to make this part fiction as I could move to a smaller home if I chose to.

Let's just say, in a home with a teen and a cat, "mother" sinks way down on the totem pole. Of course, should I forget who actually rules the roost, my Annie (she's the cat, not the teen) would let me know loudly and messily. (Then again, my teen would probably do the same.) 😀

Lol, I love this one!! And I laughed my socks off at the last line: I tried a couple of husbands and found cats to be more cuddly and loving....
That is so true in a lot of cases. Well cats are superior to men, of course. I Think you have a winner here, it's brilliant. Well done and good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

You've got it right, except cats think they are superior to everyone on this planet. LOL

They could be right, as well!! :))

I know whereof you speak. I am also 75 and my last cat died so the granddaughter got us a big dog. How can you not love a pet? You tell an amusing story, especially when comparing cats to husbands.

So, now you are a slave to your dog. They are a kinder master than cats and will give you some leeway. LOL Thank you for reading and commenting.

Your story shows that you have a compassionate nature and a heart of gold. You are a prisoner to love - but that is the best kind. If you move without your pets you would be lonely and sad. So if you can't take them with you you might well be a happy prisoner to love. Best wishes for your entry.

Thank you. I am, indeed, a prisoner of love. This is part fiction because I don't have quite that many animals and I could move to a smaller home if I chose. I fabricated to make it fiction for the contest.

I don't about that. I think there are many places that are pet friendly. It may take more time and diligence but a real estate agent who specializes in senior living could help. I think the many seniors and pet owners on the site will relate to your story.

Good luck.

Thank you for reading and commenting. To make this fiction I needed to fabricate a bit. I could move if I chose as I don't have that many cats anymore.

I enjoyed the read and your writing style made me smile! You also managed to show the huge role animals play in our lives, and one can turn down a life of ease just to have a pet they enjoy!
I think it was a very cool interpretation of the prompt and I wish you luck in the contest!

Thank you for reading and commenting. I fabricated a bit to make it fiction. I do still have six cats but I could move to a smaller home if I chose to. Also, I did love the man I was married to, he just wasn't as soft and warm as the cats.

Thank you for helping the kitties who were abandoned at your farm, Mystery Author. Your contest entry reads well. I know animals can be better than people in many cases. Your kitties know you love them. Your words/lines flow smoothly to tell your story.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Thank you. It is a bit fiction though. I could move to a smaller home if I chose to and I did love my husband.

I love the part about husbands ;). Very cute story, and even cuter that you felt the need to include the part where you already know they will be taken care of if you pass. You must really love them.
