As success in golf is in the dirt so it is with genealogy. The Saints tho not require are ever indexing for anyone from the past, but they feel required to pull four generations of their own. good write up.

This was one of the most fascinating stories I've read in a long while. I find ancestry delightfully fun to delve into anyway, although I've not done much of it myself. Thank you so much for sharing this story about your family and I hope you will add to this with more stories about family members. I'd like to hear some of the stories your grandpa told you. You did an excellent job of putting this together and I hope this does well in the contest. MM

Your story is interesting. I also like the Ancestry website. I have used it for my generation findings. It is very informative about ancestors and the past generations.

Congratulations on your discoveries.
Well written story.
Unfortunately, scammers and charlatans have infiltrated the industry to the point that identical twins get different results. Not that some companies don't do honest, exceptional work, but some bad actors have begun to spoil the barrel.
Best of luck.

Thank you so much for the review and comments. There are always scammers and dishonest people ready to ruin every good thing that comes along. Not ever line you trace will turn out to accurate. Too many people guess at who their ancestors might be. I'm impressed with the DNA done by Ancestry. When they said I'm related to a person I've never heard off, I research it and sure enough it proves out.

Again, congrats

Excellent entry for the Pictures contest. I like the picture you chose and the tale that goes with it.
Grandparents stories are the best. I remember my grandma's.
You captured my attention right away and held it all the way through.

Thank you so much, Gypsy Rose. I so glad my story held your attention. I drove my grandparent nuts begging for stories. I love tracing my ancestors. It is interesting to find out all about your roots.

This is a very interesting post. I've always been intrigued with the idea of tracing our families ancestry but never had the money to delve too deeply into it. It must be very exciting to explore it.

Thank you Mary. It is fascinating and addictive to see how much you can learn. You should start you on family tree and if you have information on your grandparents on both sides, put their information in to google and you'll likely come up with and go from there. You can go a long way without spending a lot of money.

This is an awesome, well-written piece! You should submit to Ancestry! I also have been tracing my family history and also have a membership on Ancestry. I have gone back to the early 1700s and have managed to come across a treasure trove of pictures of these relatives that I would otherwise not have had access to. I think your piece makes a very good case for why others should start searching with an Ancestry or other membership. You should submit it if there is a way! Nice job!

How exciting it must have been to see that photo after finding unknown relatives on Ancestry. That site and organization have had a huge impact on millions of people. I enjoyed reading your story and have made some editing and proofreading notes on some minor language mistakes/typos.
photographers pictures were usually on tin or glass.==> photographers' -- Although personal cameras weren't common, photography was in full bloom before the Civil War. Before that tintypes and daguerreotypes were as you explain. You might want to rephrase "In those days" since you are talking about grandpa and it is easy to think 20the century. Something like, "When great-grandpa was young" would clarify.
relatives, yielded information only going back -- comma after relatives is extraneous
It wasn't until I got my first computer, that I realized there -- extraneous comma
from just summitting a sample of your saliva -- funny typo ==> submitting
and dates into the tree you have started with ancestry, ==> Ancestry
It is accurate for at least, five or six generations back. -- no need for comma
Now, back to the great-grand-father, who ==> great-grandfather, whom
we believed had never had his picture made, I found out we were wrong. ==> made. I found
before the civil war took place, => Civil War
The original portrait I am sharing was on glass ==> is
This wasn't only one of the many relative's pictures I was able to get by ==> was only one ... relatives' (plural)
I was so thrilled to see how my great-grand-father looked. ==> great-grandfather

You are very welcome. It's a wonderful story and I think it's amazing that your father resembled your great-grandfather.

How fascinating! You went much further with Ancestry.com than we did. My daughter did have us do a brief membership and she was happy to find out like you, that two ancestors were on the Mayflower and there were connections to a president or two. It IS fascinating. I'm so happy that you got this picture and you could see the resemblance to your father. How cool!! Best wishes in the contest!!
Typos:
Then I learned the "Later Day Saints," (Latter-day)
Irish linage wasn't Irish at all (lineage)

My membership ends with the them this month, but when they run a special, I'll join again. I'm so glad you noticed I spelled the name of the church wrong. When Ancestry first started they weren't charging but that was before DNA and it wasn't as valuable as it is now. They do keep changing the percentages of the nationalities they say that your DNA shows. Now they have taken away my Irish and I'm more Scotch that I used to be. I guess they learn more over time.

That's true for my husband who thought he was more German but he's more English than he thought.

A really interesting account here for the Pictures contest of what tracing one's lineage these days can tell us. DNA has really opened a new door into the past - a thoroughly enjoyable read

Thank you so much for the review and the comment. I've had a lot of fun tracing my ancestry. I've found stories about some of these people but I wish I knew more of what they were like. Because of genealogy, I decided to start writing my own story. Maybe someone in the future will be interest.
