An interesting piece which had -- at least, for me-- a surprise ending! Indeed, the ending caused me to re-read the poem. Well done and thought provoking. ann

Thanks so much Ann, such a lovely review. It made me so sad to hear it crying so mournfully, but I just found out the neighbours are puppy-sitting, so it will soon be home with its own family.

Well, you certainly had us guessing! I was wondering about all the worldwide problems or potential family problems that cause that kind of insomnia but it's a new puppy! Lol. Did you really get a new puppy???

Thanks so much Helen. Glad I kept you guessing! No, we didn't get another, it was the next door family, but it had such a loud and mournful cry that it kept me awake, even across the distance between us. Made me very sad to hear its distress.

Oh, your mother's heart felt for this little puppy!

Thanks so much for reviewing - glad I caught you! No, it is next door, and its mournful crying could be heard despite the distance between us. But I found out his morning that they are puppy-sitting, so not permanent! However, it was very upsetting to hear it crying so sadly.

Poor little thing, they are so sensitive, puppies, hopefully it will settle with his new mummy, I can remember our last dog, he was such a delightful natured boy, he would tiddle himself with excitement, he was a rescued stray, too young to be away from his mother, we had to feed him puppy milk. Beautifully written Wendy, blessings Roy

Oh the poor baby. He or she needs a hot water bottle filled 3/4rds so the water will move inside. Like a child the baby wanders where his mommy has gone. You're breaking my heart over here, Wendy.

Hugs, Carol

AHH, I do understand. Officer housing at Fort Campbell, KY was duplex housing. Our neighbors just got a new Weimaraner puppy. The houses were connected by a wall between the laundry rooms. You guessed it this puppy cried most of the night for many nights. Thank you for sharing. I'd forgotten about it.

Something of an over-reaction I would venture to suggest. This is something called bathos which is a figure of speech not generally understood and is not to be confused with pathos. It consists of the big build up that kind of fizzles out at the end. It is most often inserted in a piece of writing accidentally, but this little piece is built around that idea.

Thank you for reviewing. Yes, this was not meant to be "literature" in any shape or form, just an expression of the sadness I was feeling for an animal in distress. Probably an over-reaction, but nevertheless ....

My old neighbours had a dog that literally barked all day long and drove me up the wall. The dog was abandoned in the back yard adjacent to my property and even when they were home they didn't let the dog into the house. I felt sorry for it, but it made my life miserable. They eventually sold their house and took the dog with them, I've had peace ever since. I can identify with your write here Wendy, love Dolly x

Thanks so much Dolly, for reviewing. Unfortunately dogs often bark when they are bored. poor thing, it needed company and walks.

Oh, Wendy, how sad. Does that happen a lot with dogs when they are first separated from their mother? I can just imagine listening to the crying all night, or most of the night!

Yes, it is quite usual unfortunately. Some people wrap up an alarm clock in a small towel to represent a heart beat and give them a little teddy bear to cuddle. Probably the mother dog was upset too. It really upsets me to hear a dog crying.
Thanks so much for reviewing. I appreciate it.

Your succinct and well told story tugged at my heartstrings.... I wanted to go find the puppy and be company for it, sleep with it, snuggle it so it felt safe and loved. Your dog sensed it too. Hopefully next door's puppy will get the loving attention it needs as it matures.

I do hope so - they are out a lot, so it may be quite lonely. When we next chat I will offer playdates with Sunny for times when they go out.
Thanks so much for your very understanding review.

Hi Wendy,
You went with a dog's feelings in this one. It must be so hard for a puppy to be snatched away from its mother after just 8 short weeks. But they come around pretty quickly... if the new owners are kind, at least. So many dogs are tied to a stake in the backyard... around and around they go, wearing a path in the dirt. That's what's really sad. And then they're put on rations of cheap dog food. That's criminal! Dogs should be fed table scraps... they are better than any canned dog food.
So you listened to your neighbor's new puppy all night, eh? That sure would keep you awake.
Nicely penned! I enjoyed your story!
Hugs,
Kimbob

They are kind, but out a lot, so it won't have much company, sadly.
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review. I hate seeing animals upset, and it distresses me greatly if they are chained up. So cruel.
