Hi Yvonne,
You sent me to my dictionary right away, but I didn't find "brogans" there. I had to google it to see what they are... a type of shoe invented in Ireland and Scotland. So would those children...
"where children live in big, brown brogans" (nice alliteration, by the way)
be the same ones Mother Goose wrote about?
"There was an old woman who lived in a shoe.
She had so many children, she didn't know what to do.
She gave them some broth without any bread;
And whipped them all soundly and put them to bed."

And would you be hinting at this nursery rhyme as well?
"Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating his Christmas pie;
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, "What a good boy am I!" "

And finally, I'm guessing
"Rub-a-dub-dub,
Three men in a tub,
And who do you think they be?
The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,
And all of them out to sea."

You continue to relate nonsense nursery rhymes for the young and "young-at-heart", "a magic land only the young at heart can visit..."
You can't beat a good nonsense poem.
Of course, I believe fairies are real. They're like aliens... just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they aren't there. We called them "pixies" when I was a youngster. I wrote about them way back in my portfolio (2010) in a poem called "Pixie Dust".
This is a great entry for the "Door event" in your writing club. You never know where you'll find this magical land.
Nicely penned!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Thank you for this wonderful review. I believe in fairies, too, but I don't tell just anyone that. It's been said that I live in my own little world, but it's okay. I'm happy and they know me there. lol. Yes, you picked on all the references in that poem. I'm so happy you liked my poem.

This is a lovely fantasy free verse Yvonne, filled with nursery characters we all know and loved. I love your finish about the magical land where only the young at heart can visit. It's only in my mind that I'm still young, I guess that lets me in LOL. Enjoyed it,
cheers,
valda

For sure. My second son, when seeing fireflies the Dizney percents and Tinker Bell managed to get the attention one night. A firefly landed on the screen and he thought it to be Tinker Bell. Hard time explaining the difference. Excellent poem.

Hello Yvonne,
I'd love to visit that magic place that you've described, that lies just beyond those doors. Who would have thought that those ancient, broken doors would be concealing such treasures. Well done my friend, a delightful read. Good luck in the contest.
Have a blessed day.
Tom

Hello Yvonne.

The construction of your free verse poem is well done, and the graphic verbal images take the reader to the place where children live. Since I'm in my second childhood, I might join them.

Robert

You did a great job with your poem for the club, Yvonne. The color scheme pairs well with your well thought out words. I like the repeated phrase ' a land'. You used rhyme and alliteration well, too. Your many examples prove that behind those doors lies a wealth of special 'things' for the young at heart. Those could be anyone who has a desire to explore new things and not just sit and let life pass them by. Your words are inviting to all to open the doors and begin their adventures.
Respectfully, Jan

There have been quite a few interpretations of that battered, yet character filled entrance to heaven knows what, but mainly doors are an exit or an entrance, and yours is the most fascinating of all Yvonne, well done, good job, blessings Roy

I truly loved the picture of the ancient doors, damommy. It did indeed open to a wonderful world that was beyond doubt a fantastic land where children only could enter. Very well done, extremely creative and greatly enjoyed.

Every closed door that confronts you conceals some kind of mystery and this free verse speculates on what that might be. Could it open onto the land of nursery rhymes? The poem tells us only the young at heart can pass through.

I am feeling younger by the minute.
