Your story is presented with a surprising ending; mom returning with two Easter bonnets. I can't even imagine two bald heads after a hair cutting. Did your mom weep? My daughter cut her bangs using a school scissors, too. Not a happy camper!

this story was based on fact with a little embellishment to make it fiction, but the way I remember it, she was mostly angry at me, and of course the bonnets were a tad big without our hair underneath, but at least they covered the haircuts. Had to chuckle at your daughter. :)

Excellent entry for the ~ Family Story ~ (fiction) writing prompt contest. I read the rules... It's crazy. You did well with them.
A stunning and dramatic story in its entirety, though short, it's compelling in structure and substance. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Gypsy. It was fun.

I enjoyed your story a lot, especially as it reminded me that at five I cut off my fringe, because the weather was very hot. I still remember my mother's anger, and her words that at least it was the start of the summer holidays, and it would look a bit better by the time school restarted. Yes, by then it was about 1 centimetre long! Best wishes for your entry in the contest.

thanks Wendy. My story seemed to resonate with female readers.
You wouldn't believe the number of people responding who cut off their hair when they were little. I love it.

I love this. I can imagine the girl's looks, mom's astonishment and the aftereffects that lasted for a long time. Boot camp clippings for Easter
dressing. Not suggested.

LOL, yes, I am sure the birds would have been grateful. A very nice story for this contest, good luck. Even though it is posted as fiction it does seem to have a ring of truth, and that makes it good. Good Work.

thanks for your comments. It was based on a true story. My sister tells it differently. :)

This fiction story could very well be true. When my sister was around five years old, she framed her face with bubblegum in her hair, and discovered she couldn't remove it. I was seven years old and decided to use scissors to cut the gum out. Your story reminded me of my mother's dismay when she saw my sister's thin hair trimmed back almost two inches deep. Your story reflects the way young children actually think. Best wishes in the contest.

this is so funny. I have gotten so many responses about similar situations with sisters. Seems big sisters with scissors and little sister's hair is fate waiting to happen.

Lol. Thanks for sharing this cute story. You know, I think every family has a haircutting story. My father-in-law's sister cut his beautiful curls, and my granddaughter cut her little brother's curls. I now know it's not just the genes. Creative artwork can also inspire haircutting!
Best wishes in the contest!

creative devilment! gleeful revenge. but a kind of artwork, I guess; a positive way to look at it. Cute, Helen.

This is a delightful story. I think a lot of kids have experimented with cutting their hair. Funny that you were satisfied with cutting your sister's hair, but cut your own too. The good thing is hair grows so quickly. It probably wasn't in time for you to have curls for those new bonnets. If you'd known your mom was buy the bonnets, maybe you wouldn't have been tempted to cut your hair. Great story, and best of luck in the contest. This should be a top contender. judi

And I appreciate especially your last remark!

You're welcome. I think I cut my own hair one time but have no recollection of the outcome. judi

This is a very cute story or memory, and one that puts me in mind of my seven-year-old son who, only two weeks ago, took the scissors to his own hair. Up to that point, he had resembled a member of Status Quo, with very long hair, and he ended up looking that one of the Beatles in the sixties. Actually, I quite liked his effort, but it did need a lot of tidying. Thank you for sharing your very amusing tale. Very nicely written.

and I bet you did the tidying. Hope you have pictures of the before, and would be great if you got one of the cutting.
Anyway, thanks for reading mine and for your kind review.

Nice little story, nothing like the innocent mischief of a toddler, poor mom. Who knew all these years later that that incident would become a potential contest winner, good luck and have a great day!
