I'm looking forward to reading this book, it's got off to a good start. I'm guessing Tyler is the real Daniel Boone? That will be good, I loved watching him on the television when I was a girl. Now the war is over, there will be lots of other 'smaller' wars going on. Well done, I enjoyed this first chapter, and good luck in the contest! :)) Sandra xx

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I enjoyed reading and wish you luck.

An orderly stuck his head in and said, "Suh, a courier is here from Gen'rul Lee to see the Cunnel." (I would put a period after 'in' and then go straight to the dialogue. Just a tighter read.)

"Gen'rul Lee's compliments, Suh," he fished in his pouch and retrieved the document. He then added, "I'm to wait for a reply, Suh." (TRY - "Gen'rul Lee's compliments, Suh." He fished in his pouch and retrieved the document. "I'm to wait for a reply, Suh.")

"Yes Suh."
"Take this young man to the cook's wagon so he can get a meal and some coffee."
"Yes Suh," Myers said and motioned to the courier to follow him. (Each person speaking gets their own paragraph. I saw the same problem in two different areas.)

"Tell the General thank you for his courtesy ,with my compliments, and I will comply to the letter." (first comma closer to 'courtesy')

"Thankee, Suh," then saluted, turned and exited the tent. (period after 'Suh.' and a capital letter needed on 'Then')

"The yanks ain't got any say in the matter, as of right now you boys are free to go, "Mosby said. (ending quotation mark need to go after 'go' not by 'Mosby')

I am a history junkie. I love the study of the past and have learned much from the historical account of the peculiar things that were done in the past. Truly the past keeps repeating itself and surprisingly, many fail to see or learn the lessons the past tries to teach us.

I am sorry to admit that I am not familiar with the historical background of the story. But I enjoyed reading this first chapter of your book. You've given enough information for me to be able to look forward to the chapters to follow. Good job and good luck!

An easy read. Being a fan of John and his actions with the forty-third, according to Jim Williamson's diary, it was the saddest day of their lives. The farewell had them all in tears. However, it was bittersweet for all. John finished his life very interesting. Good one, Earl. A million years ago, I authored many books concerning that war and the Mosby Rangers. Now that was fun. Been there, done that even at Appomattox. It is always good to see other writers capture the moment.

Nice. You've given enough information for me to be able to tell that something interesting is going to happen soon while also withholding enough info that I'm not quite sure what it is and am interested to keep reading. Good job and good luck!

This sounds like a great beginning for a new book. I wasn't aware that the union forces had orders to hang members of the losing side. Being from the south, all my ancestors were on that side and many died fighting. I will be following your story with interest.
Beth

This work has reached the exceptional level

This well-paced, intriguing look at a Confederate Officer's communications and personal responses to Lee's plans to surrender at Appommatox brings to the fore the remarkable character of the soldiers we meet as we read. A fictional treatment of an historical occasion provides an opportunity to keep our judgements away from the rigidity of opinion that often follows scholarly historical reading.
