This story was so interesting and a fine tribute to a person who hadn't really known that well. She impacted a lot of lives and left some memories by inserting herself onto the stage of life. What a great way to end a funeral. More people deserve a standing ovation.

I get the giddy humor of your piece, it's amazing how she manage to be omnipresent and impose herself in all the social activates. The ending is memorable: "Every funeral I had ever attended ended in prayer. Not this one. Two hundred people stood applauding and singing, "Good night, Irene, good night, Irene, we'll see you in our dreams."" Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings and the contest.

Terry,
I've been on this site since November and this is only the second six I've given. Loved the title and the ending. Separating "I had something to learn." by itself gave it good impact.

This story relates a truth. We see people, but do not "know" them. My own experiences echo this. Sometimes, I've made an assumption about someone and later after getting acquainted, found out they were "much more" than my fleeting consideration.

Suggestions to make your great story even better 1. Chorus instead of course. 2. no capitals for matriarch 3. voice, no good on the ears. 4-every one, not everyone. Just piddly stuff.

Ramona

this poem applauds the courage and emotional hardiness of an ungifted person who nonetheless repeatedly and positive strides onto the stage of life, and - of theater. The writer should have used "onto," rather than on in the couple of occasions in which Irene's wonderful commitment to her humanity was captured. This is a moving story.
