I pray this is not a true story, but if it is the man who denied this woman will have a lot to answer for when he meets God. You did an excellent job. Shirley

Yikes! That is quite disturbing, Liz. How can "Brother John" serve on an Outreach Committee with an attitude and beliefs like that? The Lord would not be happy about him declining this elderly woman aid. He doesn't call the "saved". He calls the "unsaved". Brother John is a terrible hypocrite, I'm sorry to say. Jesus taught us to love one another. If earthly homelessness is anybody's fault, it's the government's and people like Brother John sitting on an Outreach Committee. God doesn't want anyone to go to Hell. But apparently, Brother John does. What a shame!
I watched "The Magnificent Seven" over the Christmas holidays. It's my #1 all-time favorite movie. I don't know how many times I've watched it, but I'll never tire of it. Early in the movie, there's an undertaker who can't bury an old Indian in the town's "Boot Hill" because too many citizens are white and refuse admittance to minorities. Chris Larabee Adams (Yul Brynner) and Vin Tanner (Steve McQueen) jump up on the expensive hearse wagon and snap the horses into action. Up they go, to the top of Boot Hill, taking insults all the way... "Indian lover" ... where 4 gunmen wait for them and order that they take the hearse back down the hill. Chris couldn't believe that such prejudice was going on. He would have none of it.
I have to wonder what the minister would say if he knew that Brother John had such terrible beliefs. Its' a sad tale, Liz. And really, something should be said. Only Christians are allowed help? What kind of Outreach is that? Wow!
Hugs,
Kimbob

That's so awful! I don't think Jesus ever said that He wouldn't help someone unless they confirmed faith in Him. And He has the authority to say that if HE wanted. But His followers shouldn't ever make that kind of condition! And did Scott ever get rid of the unwanted freeloader using up his electricity ?

Sad to say, this story is true. I wish Scott had ratted him out to the minister! The freeloader's car was stolen--she's staying in a cheap motel near her job--good thing for Scott!

You did a good job, Liz, pointing out the two faced actions of so called Brother John. He represents much of what many people get discouraged about with the subject of religion. How unkind he was to one in need.
Respectfully, Jan

Brother John should be prepared to have his own hot seat when the time comes. I can't stand this type of false religious fervor that places conditions on whether or not some should be helped. What would Father John say if a hospital refused to treat him because he's of a faith that isn't sanctioned by that particular establishment. It makes me want to spit nails. When my infant sister died at six weeks old, the minister told my dad that it was his fault because he didn't always go to church. Dad never set foot in a church again.

OMG! What a horrible thing for this woman to say. Ten bucks she's a Baptist! I hope Carol isn't homeless because she's on drugs or booze. Then again, I've heard stories about children who steal Mom's savings and put her out on the street.

Wow, "Brother John" just proved he isn't much of a Christian! Maybe he needs to be "saved". I think he needs to be removed as a member of the outreach program. Scott, on the other hand is a fine example of a good Christian.

Hello Liz,
I'm always amazed at what people think God is like. While there is a time for judgement, and there is most certainly a law of sowing and reaping, it would be good if people would read the whole bible and see that our god is one of mercy. Most of the criticism He had for the Israelites was over their lack of compassion. Jesus himself gave the example of the good Samaritan. For those who don't know, Samaritans were hated by the Jews, and yet a Samaritan acted in Christian charity. My hat is off to Scott. Please pass along my gratitude to him for acting in a manner that is worthy of his calling as a Christian.
Have a blessed day my friend.
Tom

How nice of Brother John. I wonder what in his upbringing or life experience taught him that this sort of classism was acceptable. Unfortunately you can find this sort of thing all over India, thinking that people are fated to stay within their station. In America the bureaucratic expression is usually somewhat more benign, and focused on behavior: "stay in your lane." Unfortunately people think they need a slave so that they can continue acting like slaves themselves sprouting up to corrupt even a religion that states the opposite. It's a sad state of affairs in human evolution. Maybe someone needs to remind John that he is eating someone else's table scraps.

Brother John is an example of a "Christian "
that professes his devotion to Jesus but does not follow his teachings.
Who is he to say what is God's punishment.
He is no Christian
