Sandra,
This is a an imformatative and interesting backgound of idioms. Men really did do all they could to keep women at home, didn't they. I am glad women were fighting for their independence even then. I never heard of 'storm in a teacup' but I've heard 'tempest in a teapot.
I feel sorry for those ducks.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Joan

Thank you, Joan! I love looking into Idioms, they have been such fun, and had given me quite a few surprises. I'm so pleased you enjoyed these. Those ducks, yes, I agree, that was sad! Thanks, my friend. :)) Sandra xx

You're very welcome, Sandra. It was fun reading them. It is a surprise that some are so old.

Hi Sandra, LMBO...I love that story...leave it to Graham...

I'm glad she knitted them all jumpers...I love a happy ending...

and yes you got me on one of your Idioms...Storm in a Teacup...never heard that one...

and maybe if people had to pop for a penny to use the toilet in public places ...they would keep the bathrooms cleaner...EEEEKKKK...

I love your Idioms my amazing friend...had me laughing for this New Years night...I bet you did have fun looking them up...

miss you much...I hope your back is doing better...tell Graham to walk on it...I love your story told beautiful you...very well written...and your pictures are awesome...
sending all my jolly love to you on Santa's sled...
get it now...he will be leaving for the North Pole soon...

I was at the store yesterday...as I was getting my milk
out of the store frig...I turned around...and there was...what looked like about a 12-13 year old boy in a full dressed Santa suit...his mother said to him...Santa get some milk...I just scratched my head...wondering if either of them knew Santa had left the room until next year...but kids will be kids...just not sure about the mother...so if you see a kid on a sled flying over your house...dropping red hearts...there all for you...so much love you...Linda xxoo
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and Graham...xxoo â?¤ð???ð???ð???ð???ð???ð?§¨â?¨

I'm going to search Graham's brain to pull out some more of his little stories. Everyone liked this one. I did, too!!

I'm really pleased you liked these three idioms, there are so many it's hard to choose which ones to research. I'll do some more as and when I can.

Bless that little boy in his Santa costume. Aww. Yes, I'll keep my eyes peeled, and if I see him I'll catch all the red hearts you're sending me!! I won't send those ones back, but I'll fill the next jet that comes your way with bundles more hearts and love for you!

Have a wonderful, healthy New Year, my dear friend. Love and hugs (just a few more to keep you going until the jet flies over!!) :)) Sandra xxxxxxx

I should talk about his Santa suit...
I listen to Christmas music all year around...

I'm sitting here watching...All I Want For Christmas...and looking at the snow coming down outside...Christmas was green...but at least New Years is white...

I'll put my coat, gloves, ear muffs, snow boots, winter socks, and my scarf on...and head up to the roof...and look for a jet dropping bundles of hearts and love...

the idioms are fun to read...and so is Graham
's story...it was most likely one of the reasons you married him...he told great stories...until next time...so much love coming your way my amazing friend...HO-HO-HO...Linda xxoo

Happy new Year!
The origins of these familiar idioms were interesting .I have read Canterbury tales as an English Literature student and I remember the idiom'fish out of water'. But I did not know that he was the first one to use that saying..
Thank you for sharing the 'duck'story .I loved it !

Thank you so much, Sanku, for reviewing this one after the promotion had finished, that was so very kind of you. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and I wish for you the best New Year ever!!

I have just posted a prologue for my new novel. It is a bit on the sexy side, but the story isn't, it's more a mystery romance. The prologue is to get my heroine ready for what will be going on in her life. I hope you'll follow it with me!!

Warm hugs, dear friend. :)) Sandra xxx

Sandra,

What fun! Though, when I read your author's notes, you had me scratching my head. I thought you'd been here as long as I could remember, but your notes made it sound like you were rather new. I had to go look and sure enough, we joined the same year! hahahaha

I did enjoy your nonsense! Thank you!

I did make a mess of my author's notes, didn't I? I've changed it now so it reads over the years! Lol. Yes, we both joined in the same year, a few years ago now.
Thanks, Robyn, I'm glad you enjoyed my 'nonsense' and that is the perfect description of it!! Lol. Have a wonderful New Year, my friend. Love and hugs, Sandra xxx

It's been fun reading all the idioms, the ones I've always known, and the ones I've learned for the first time. Like, "Spend a Penny" on a pay toilet, only for men. Of course, I guess, women with an unbearable urge were just poop out of luck. LOL. Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!

Trust you, LOL!!! It's strange, but I still say I'm going to spend a penny, it's something I was brought up with as a child. Some of the idioms go back years, and it's been fun researching them. I'm glad you enjoyed them, too, dear friend. You have a Happy New Year, too. Love and hugs, Sandra xxx

Hello Sandra,
Ah, those were the days when a penny could buy a piece candy
or a visit to the loo.
Did you notice how poetic Americans are using alliteration
in their version, tempest in a teapot?
Graham's duck story reminds me of a lot of college students in my dorm, only it was more like weed in their feed.
Another great post.
Happy Holidays to all.
Robert

It does have a lovely ring to it, doesn't it? Lol.
Thank you so much, Robert, for another of your 'such fun' reviews, and all those beautiful stars. As for your college student friends, things haven't changed much over the years, have they!!
Have a lovely week, and a great New Years Eve! (I'll be reading in bed!) Warm hugs, Sandra xx

Dear Sandra, these have been delightful! Thanks for your research and sharing. I am familiar with the duck story, hehe. Best wishes as you hunker down and make progress on your novel! Happy New Year to you, too!

Thank you, Mama Baer! I'm so pleased you enjoyed my idioms, and the little story. You are the second person who knew about the Drunken Duck Inn, that is brilliant! I'll still be writing idioms in the New Year, but will fit them in between my new fiction novel. I've had too much fun researching these to stop now. Warm hugs, my friend. Sandra xx

All the idioms are familiar, dear Sandra. But I didn't know the back stories. You have the rare ability to convey information in a witty entertaining way that fascinates rather than bores your readers.

The story of the drunken ducks is priceless! The imaginative names of some British pubs can be an endless source of storytelling.

Hoping you enjoyed Christmas and wishing you and yours all blessings in the New Year.

Stay safe

Julia

That might be an idea ... research the names of our British pubs! Thank you so much for this really nice review, Julia, it gives me so much pleasure to know those who read the idioms I've been researching, have also enjoyed learning their origins. Have a wonderful New Year, too, my friend. Warm hugs. Sandra xx

This is an exceptionally written essay on modern idioms and their historical backgrounds! I love each and every one of them but I especially love the attached story at the end of this chapter! This is all about the drunken ducks and how the inn was named the drunken duck inn! Brava, my friend!
I look forward with bated breath to the beginning of your next chapter the return!
Thanks for posting this at the beginning of the week it gives me something to look forward to!
Happy 2022!

Thank you so much, Jesse, for this really lovely review and all the golden stars!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story of the drunken ducks. I had to check it out because it sounded too funny to be true. I will be researching more idioms in the next year, but I'll also be writing my new fictional novel. Have a wonderul 2022, my friend, and stay safe and well. :)) Sandra xx

As always enjoyed yet another of your choice of idioms especially the last story about the inn and the Drunken Ducks which I found quite endearing.
It is an unusual name for an Inn and I just love the story whether true or not.
