That twist ending was at once hilarious and terrifying (coming from someone who has also had a mouthful of soap). As such I was very glad to read in your footnote that there was not another soaping.

Excellent work.

Thank you, I think the first grandson could get away with about anything. Terry.

A very nice story from your past. Learning about your parents from the grandparents is an incredible gift, not to be missed. There was no grandchild getting soap in their mouth, in this story. They get away with everything.

Good luck in the contest.

Such a cute story. I have to admit, I would have laughed, too. I enjoyed this bit of flash fiction. You did a good job with so few words. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you, she did laugh, I think more at the memory of what she did to her son, than what I said. Terry.

This is very funny, and you couldn't have picked a more perfect closing line. I doubt there was anyone of a certain generation for whom that bar of soap wasn't the ultimate threat. Similarly, there's probably no kid who didn't try to get dirt on their parents, if for nothing more than to validate their own behavior. In short, this is a cute and very relatable story.

Very funny, Terry ... and I really like the way you told this story. It was pretty neat the way you set this up so that the punchline was a sudden surprise but this picture (as you described the scene) was so clear. Who wouldn't laugh? Very nice!!

Goodness, Terry - that was a bit of fun from the past! I love reading these short anecdotes from what seems so long ago. It's not, really. I remember the 60s well, and I can just imagine this scene. My dad, who was a good churchgoing man, a dairy farmer and also part Irish with the complexion and the temperament to match, used to tell the cows off when they misbehaved. He'd yell, "Jam and butter the muddy bucket of pitch!" And then an hour later he'd be singing hymns. He had a loud voice, so the church folk could hear him across the paddocks. The cows didn't care. He always said a little colourful language was MUCH kinder than slapping them.

Thanks for the input, changes will be made. You should write the story of your dad! Terry.

I remember the old bar of soap threat. I never experienced it but I watched my brothers get the soap a few times. I love this short true story. It is nicely done and gave me my laugh for the day. I wish you tons of luck in the contest.

Like Father, like Son, right? You did a great job with your contest entry. I enjoyed reading it. I like the dialogue and the unexpected ending. I could 'see' Granny laughing at your comment.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Hahaha! This is truly a delightful and funny Grandmother story. Like father like son. A chip off the old block. You gave the reader backstory, followed by realistic dialogue, and finally the surprise twist at the end. Well done. Best wishes in the contest.
