This prose poem is beautifully written. I like your expressions like "bony fingers of the trees, glimmering in the waning light." It flows naturally like a river that are full boats with plenty of homegrown fruit.

It's nice to have such a great tradition.

It's exceptionally written

This is a lovely Thanksgiving story and reminds me a great deal of my own family Thanksgivings growing up. In West Virginia, deer season always came around that particular holiday and my dad, brothers and their friends would always go hunting. In the evenings, we would all gather around the dining room stove and tell stories that seemed to get taller as the night went on. I can still recall the scent of apple and pumpkin pies and hot coffee as well as the sound of raucous laughter. Those were wonderful times. As you can tell, your great story stirred up a lot of memories for me.

You made me think of my own Thanksgivings growing up. There is definitely something special about all the tradition and generations and spending all day with family, interacting and playing games, watching movies and eating. I really enjoyed your recollections! You tell them well:)

Delightful memories of family gatherings and Thanksgiving celebrations here recalled with warmth and appreciation for family and the many fun-filled activities- the world now seems a less caring place these days! thanks for reminding us of better times!

Thanks for the excellent review and I guess it is true that the here and now seems to pale in comparison with those old holidays of our childhood. estory

This is beautifully written, Oliver. Those memories of large family gatherings to celebrate Thanksgiving were truly meant to make us thankful. It saddens me to know so many families these days are scattered all over the country or world and mothers no longer get to make these feasts for them all to enjoy.

Just a couple of minor things: "frost etched" should be frost-etched, one word.
"as she('s) done on all the Thanksgivings...)

Thanks for the excellent review and your wonderful perspective on the story. Part of the joy of it all was that all my uncles and aunts lived within thirty miles of each other. No longer the case today. We are just not as attached to each other as we used to be in those days, and that's sad. estory

Hi estory, this was a lovely piece of non fiction, and the memories of Thanksgivings gone by. I do understand it's a special time of celebration for so many in the US. I really liked it, and it's well written setting that lovely tone.
The peeling and slicing of all those hundreds of apples = all the hundreds of apples. You use a lot of 'those' in this piece. I would try to replace some of them. Ulla:)))

Thanks for the excellent review and I am glad you got the gist of this holiday tradition over here. I wanted in some way to pay homage to all the work my mother did over all those years in this story as well. estory

Your story made for rather painful reading, personally, as it revealed an experience I have never had. The cosy scenes of family togetherness, enjoying beautifully prepared food while celebrating a tradition are wonderfully described and easily imagined - the scents and sounds, the emotions of good times shared, hopes and dreams.
The 'connection of generations' is a void in my own life; I have had to create my own memories and reasons for celebration... but it doesn't stop me from appreciating that joy in others' lives.

Thanks for the excellent review and for your very different and interesting perspective on the story. I hadn't really thought of it in this way, but when stories go out there they touch all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. That's part of the magic of writing. I am glad that it was able to be some kind of window for you into that family world that I experienced growing up. estory

Your memories of Thanksgiving are very similar to mine. I remember waking up and Mom and Dad were in the kitchen getting the turkey ready for the oven. Dad was chopping the onion and celery to make the stuffing/dressing. My brother and I always watched the Macy's Day parade. Thank you for the memory.

I can sum up your well thought out story in one word ~ family. I enjoyed reading about everything mentioned from the weather, to the food of Thanksgiving, the after meal thoughts, the media, and the love of family.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

You did a wonderful job of capturing the essence of those Thanksgiving days of the past and of the present, because as much as things change, there is still much of the old traditions, siill about making memories for the later generations. As much as putting those meals together sounds like a lot of hard work, and it was, it was also a lot of fun, even for the ones who stood in lines to buy the ingredients and for the Mom's who created it. I've been a part of that day for years and although my back and knees suffer days afterwards now, I still enjoy the work and anticipation of having the family all together Those memories we'll alwys treasure.

Thanks for the excellent reivew and I am glad you caught on to those long hours of work mothers put into this. I wanted it in some way to be a tribute to my mother who spent countless hours making that centerpiece meal that drew the family around that table. And precipitated all those memories. estory
