Like your story content's. Good manners at the table is expected; but blowing the nose is one thing that can aggravate many people. Have you ever been somewhere where they get the giggles and can't quit?

Great story, Earl, that has a lot of depth and emotions embedded inside of it. I would mention that there are two places that need attention ... drama-free zone, and "I don't need to be stuck twice...". Very well-written and an interesting read. So well done! Good luck in the contest.

This story, Dinner and a Show, makes me feel as though I was at our table when I was still a kid. The rules very similar and the reign of the dad supreme.

C'est la vie!
Aptly described by a young man growing up
Certainly, there are "klunks", from which the lessons expound
Where fathers insist on good table manners, it is noticed that they themselves might fall short
However, little things make up the big things in life
Thank you for an interesting, well-formatted and user friendly story
Best wishes at the voting booth

Earl,

My mom was always really big on manners at the table, too. It's funny that some of it 'took' and some of it didn't. NOW, if I mention a rule at the table when we're all gathered together, my eldest will say, 'I've never heard that before.' UGH

At least my youngest does take up for me and say - 'Yes, she's told us that a million times.' (HUZZAH!)

Notes:
1.) I don't need (to be) stuck twice to learn a lesson.

2.) "He can reach(,) can't he(?)"

Thanks!

I love your story. Not many families teach manners like this at the table anymore, in fact not a lot eat dinner together. I like your ending. I did notice one typo: "We just all held our breathes" I believe you meant breath.

I did enjoy reading this as it brought back memories of mealtimes when I was young, they were not quite as strict but we had to eat properly and not talk and always ask to be passed things and not allowed to leave the table till everyone had finished. Good memories and thanks for writing a good story.

This is a good story that seems like it could be true. It definitely has the aura of truth. However, you did basically repeat the sentence about the mother making sure they had good manners twice. Also "We were sat . . ." should be "We were seated at . . ."

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my story. Is that one correction the only reason you gave me four stars?
reply by Carol Hillebrenner on 03-Dec-2021
Actually 2, the repeated statement and the seated suggestion. A couple of other writers are giving 4 for one error so I maybe am a copycat. Won't do it again. Sorry.

Charming story, though with a dark undertone--the punchline makes up for it!

We weren't allowed to talk about hippies, protest marches, music (other than Johnny Cash,) [put comma outside paren] or anything controversial.

You'd [of=>HAVE] thought

Whew! I'm glad this is fiction, but I did demand that my sons had good manners and knew how to behave in any situation. However, I was never THAT hard of them. Sticking a fork in someone's hand is insane. I imagine there are parent like that, though, somewhere.

-And it was a drama [free] zone
