Oh my gosh! You had me going for sure! I figured the title was goign to throw me a twist but geez...it all read like it really could have happened just like that! I remember that mysterious "jump" and the missing money! (Yes, I'm that old.) It'd have been great in a kind of illegal but nonetheless satisfying way if you'd have been given that envelope... Better odds than winning the lottery and no taxes! GREAT STORY!

I think this is an interesting story of rags to riches and you unfolded it pretty well; a little bit of a hint at the beginning of what might be in store, but you through enough diversions to keep us guessing until the end when mom hands you the envelope. There's nothing like a big windfall to bring up your spirits in a down moment. estory

My Mom was a loving woman who made sure we had three hots and a cot. (because of the 'my' 'mom' needs a lower case 'm')

A thoroughly good short story, Earl, and much enjoyed. It's good to see a vet and his family ending up ahead of the game! You lull your readers into the supposition that Dad couldn't possibly be the man, despite his background, and so the final twist comes as a surprise. Nicely constructed and well told.
