I enjoyed this true family story. This is well written and well presented. Your descriptive writing painted clear images of the scenes as they played out. Well done, thanks for sharing.

I can feel the pain for you and your brother, did he have some sort of learning disability, back then no one understood there are different ways to learn, and most kids just gave up out of frustration. very sad

This is great storytelling, from the beginning when you waved goodbye, to the ending when your brother drove away. I especially liked the way you started the story by putting the reader into the main event, and then gave back story to let the reader know what led up to you brother waving farewell. The sequence was perfect, and dialogue authentic. I wish you the best in the contest.

Good story. Well written. Good work.
You write a convincing relationship and paint a realistic picture. I can see Dad making his decision.

"Bye, John. I love you. Please write. Don't forget to write every day." I yelled and waved until the car was out of sight. John leaned out the back window to return my wave.

"Don't worry, Olevia." He shouted. - a comma after Olevia would work better.
Best wishes.

I appreciate your reading my work. Would you be kind enough to tell me what caused it to be a 4 rating, good, rather than a 5 rating, excellent? I have gotten only 5's and 6's on this piece and I am always looking to improve. Was it content, presentation, grammar or what shortcoming did it have Thanks so much for your time. ann

This is an interesting family story. It is too bad John didn't finish high school. The world is tough and not education makes it tougher. Did john actually enlist? Your story is nicely done and I wish you a ton of luck in the contest.

Thank you for reading and commenting. John did enlist and he got his GED. I hope you read the next chapter - My Brother is Back in Town. We all have our individual paths to follow and they are unique to us. John continues to follow his. Appreciate your comments. ann

It's tough when siblings are so close, it does my old heart good to see my daughters relate so well, to sit with each other and not say a word, but everything is right with the world, my grands are so fortunate to have mums like that, and dads of course. Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you for the kind words. I couldn't agree more -- family relationships that go deep are valuable and especially so as we grow older and need those people in our lives who really know us and still love us! ann

What an upheaval for you. To lose your closest friend and confidant plus your sister and her family. To be left alone, as it were, even though you had your father and stepmother, it's not the same.

Your writing flows so smoothly and you have a knack for unique phrasing. It's absolutely a pleasure to read your stories.

"Life is All About Change" gives a clear understanding as you so vividly share details to tell about how your 'younger brother leaves Tioga to join the military'. I'm sure every reader is anxious to know what happens to him and especially Olevia next. So interesting to read.
