This is a cool story from Sassafras' point of view. I would think if people in Seattle would need an alternate plan if they are planning an outdoor party. I like stormy weather as long as I'm inside.

It's always nice to read about man's best friend, even those big as a barn. Or should I have said, especially, those big as a barn, big in size, heart, and kindness as most Great Dane's are. Thanks for sharing. Hope you're good as can be expected and things are moving in the right direction!

This is an excellent entry into this writing prompt contest, Brett! Using the voice of Sassafras as the narrator works very well. Good luck in the contest.

They say the words,
"dumb dog"
But what was going on in the humans World?
Yes, it look like dumb Human instead!
...
"Sassafras"
This is a farmhouse writing prompt entry.
Rich in Theme and Imagery.
It also read well and flowed well with no Grammar Issues
..
Occasionally I've come up with a similar idea where character does the speaking actually allowed to communicate because of its situation
Good luck in the contest and thanks for sharing Brett.

'Chipmunk Charlie?' Love it. I give all my pets nicknames.

Love dogs, so finding a story by one, no-brainer. I had to read it.

Thank you for sharing.

Sassafras sounds like a very smart dog. He made me laugh at his thought train. Ida Mae could be the old lady on the bike in Wizard of Oz, except he's not going to fit in a basket. I'd like to find out more what happens at the party and the subsequent storm! Good luck in the contest!

Ida Mae needs to stay at home if she doesn't like Sassafras. After all, it's HIS home. For years, I raised Great Danes. They are the most wonderful creatures, sweet and gentle, and very well behaved. Phooey on people like Ida Mae who have never known the love of an animal.

Appreciate the insightful review. Glad you enjoyed this posting. Did not base Ida Mae on the witch from Dorothy, but the comparison could be drawn.

Sounds like the neighbor has it in for the poor dog.She sounds like a revengfuk old broad who would need him chocolate on purpose knowing it would harm him.T least the only good thing we can say about her is she likes Christmas. Guess she cant be all bad can she?

Brett,

Hmm.. Strange. Why would any old lady have a bone to pick against this sweet little pup? OBVIOUSLY, he is a precious angel!!

I did wonder - when I got to the end - if there should be more sense of PLACE in this story. I saw that the contest was called 'farmhouse' - right? I never got any sense that this was taking place in a rural location. It kinda felt a little more like a city, actually. I'm not sure why - maybe having neighbors? Idk. And I don't know if it matters, but I just thought I should mention it in case.

Also - all the direct references to 'mom' and 'dad' should be capped.

Thanks and good luck!

I enjoyed reading this writing prompt entry. I grew up with a Great Dane. That breed is wonderful. I would have another one but my husband is not fond of the gentle giants. Your story was fun to read.

Their poinsettas, tinsels, and mistletoes were out of bounds for me too. (You can omit 'for me' it's understood. poinsettias & mistletoe)
