Nicely done with a snappy twist. Not all were so lucky when in the sights as your young American. The fixed battle lines of WWI and the current Donbass made snipers ubiquitous. Sniper/counter-sniper is a rich topography to explore. Classed as the most hated individual on the battlefield, it was apparently a given they would be summarily executed if captured. Vietnam was choice territory for these individuals. Who knows how many of these sharpshooters were deployed and the certain casualty rates. The Balkans in Herzogovina/Bosnia was known for the amateurs killing civilians and NGO aid workers for fun in the siege of Sarajevo.

Thank you Allezw2, for the six and detailed review. I was not aware of the Sarajevo war crimes. I hope they were hung.

They were Serbian amateurs that disapeared into the populace. They were sniping at the mostly Muslim civilians who raced across streets to the shelter of buildings to get food. Aid workers at the airport unloading planes were shot and killed. I'm glad Clinton (with Albright) kicked NATO in the pants to do something. Then there was the massacre at Srebrenica: (atwww.bbc.com ? news ? world-europe-53346759Bosnia's Srebrenica massacre 25 years on - BBC News) when the gutless Dutch abandoned their assignment to protect the Bosnians against the Serbs and walked away. Years later, the Dutch general in charge at the scene admitted that he made a mistake.

The tension and intent of your story are, indeed hair-raising. Having had my husband experience this makes the content hard to read, but I am addressing the prose. Well done.

A very interesting story. It kept me captivated throughout the entire time. My brother served in Viet Nam so the story content triggered my interest. Good luck with the contest.

Thank you Patty. I hope your brother is doing well. I served 69-70-71.

You're welcome. My brother, unfortunately passed away a couple of years ago. He had a series of severe strokes that left him paralyzed. He wasn't very good toward the end and I think his body just gave out. I'm sure he's in a better place now.

That was a riveting story told just right to make the reader think the mechanic was the one shot for the surprise ending. Puts the reader in Viet Nam. Nice that it is about three people and not a group. I'm not military so I'm not sure what to call a group. Good job.

Thank you Annette. If soldiers are standing around without a mission, they are a group. If they have a mission and are standing in preparation they can be either a squad, platoon, company or brigade. It all depends on the number of soldiers and purpose.

Devastating. Brilliant narration from POV of wannabe hero--suspense is skillfully built up to the kill scene, with a graphic twist! Stunning piece.

This is really good. You have told the story from 3 points of view, and knitted if perfectly together so that the reader didn't get lost in the head-hops. Few people do that well. Great job.

Those old Mosin-nagants aren't much to look at, but I bought one for $100 along with a giant can of ammo for another $100. I've been shooting it for years with the old iron sites and no scope, and the freezer stays full of backstraps, roasts, and deer burger. Thanks for sharing another fine story. Wish I had a six.

Thanks Ric, I have a few old iron horses from WW1 @ WW11. I enjoy the craftsmanship and heavy metal; true battlefield beasts.

This is a deep and powerful story, Yardier. So well written it feels real. I held my breath when the shot was fired, sure it had hit Clarence. Best of luck in the contest.
