Wow! I am impressed with your power of description. I can visualize the carnage standing on the stage, the unease of the audience and then their impatience as they don't receive the entertainment they expected from the spectacle. Then they are so easily consoled with the entertainment of the emcee and happily go on their way with little thought for what they have seen.

Thank you very much. I wrote this - I suppose it's flash fiction - about twelve years ago, and I have always liked it. Frank

This was artfully presented without spelling errors and put readers in one time and place only to be pulled to another at the conclusion. The use of vivid descriptive imagery has the power to repulse readers and seems appropriate for the topic of this essay.

Very well done.

Thank you, leather. While I do make spelling errors occasionally, I think it undermines the intent of your very functional review to make this a first priority. I do mention such errors in my reviews, but usually at the end or in parentheses. Back in Shakespeare's day, spelling had not even been regularized - free-wheeling phonetic spelling was quite acceptable.

At first, I thought I was reading something I was acquainted with but soon learned I was mistaken. A person who has never been baptized into combat could never know what war is.
Thanks for your post.

Thanks, Ben. I was never in the military but I think that the images I created in this short-short were powerful and credible.

The stark reality of a decadent life and a war torn country where people barely survive and fear being killed every day, I enjoyed the comparison Frank and the reference to Dickens Jacob Marley trailing guts rather than chains, love Dolly x

Thank you, Dolly. Dicken's story is so wonderful a portrait of love in a hard world. "A Christmas Carol" may qualify as the greatest short story of all time.

Dear Frank,
I read your awesome poem with an open mind, because I, like you, abhor the tragedy of war; and you tell it in such a unique and striking way. I believe war is never a necessity/-but the response to an attack, whether diplomatically or physically, is necessary.
There are warmongers in every country that lose sight of armies as being only a defense.
I love your sarcasm, and dark humor. They're an exceptional way of getting your point across to the reader.
Exceptional work, Frank.
Good luck!

Very poignant and truthful, reflecting how we can stand and stare from a safe difference, recoil at the horror, then retreat to our own comfort and safety. So sad, but also so true. Beautifully written - but how many will actually hear the message?

That should have read "from a safe distance".. not difference. Apologies.

War gets its traction when ideologies and inequalities create a head-on collision of possibilities, power steps in to set the price of blood. Can this be outmaneuvered?

Wow, what an outstanding way to go at this contest. This idea would never even have crossed my mind. Besides being so original, I always admire people who add poetic value to stories. Few can pull this off so gracefully. I gave though to entering this contest by I seriously doubt it now. Excellent write. The only suggestion I could give would be to not have a capital letter for the beginning of each line. Only where needed. Other than that, I thought it was awesome. Best of luck in the contest. I see winner written all over it. Have a good one, Frank.

Thanks, DS. I'd like to try this one as a short film piece, altho it would be tough to get the big venue. Hmm.

A very creative entry for the contest. I wish you good luck in the contest. How would one present a personalization of War. Take a good look at what the results look like. The look offends you, and surely no one would ever want another war. On the other hand, there is popcorn to be had, and a nice ride to take you home. Good Job.
