Mama Baer,
This shows the positives and negative of catching and killing your own turkey. At least it is very fresh. I think I would have reacted the same as this boy. This was imaginative and witty with the repetition.
Hope this did well in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Happy New Year.
Joan

That's such a cute story and a perfectly good reason to NOT eat that turkey after witnessing its execution. I think I wouldn't have either. It's quite different if we are preparing to cook that large frozen block of bird. This reminded me of when we invited a guest for Thanksgiving only to find out she was vegetarian because she lived on a farm and her favorite lamb was supper one evening.
Best wishes in the contest!

Dear Helen, thank you for reading my little story, and for this lovely review! I am always amazed at the stories that surface with a simple prompt. We ALL have stories! Thanks for sharing yours with me. Here's to a happy November.

I got to tell you I loved this tale of savagery and had to vote for it. It was clever, funny, and well-written.
I wonder now if I can look at a turkey and drum up this image! I think I will get a frozen bird
Glad it did not become a family tradition.
Best wishes,
Mary

Dear Mary, I am always honored when you drop by. I am such a fan of your work. Thank you for taking the time to read about our turkey escapade! Though it was many years ago, it is strange how some memories remain vivid across time. Sending November wishes your way.

This is a fun frolicking Thanksgiving with a bit of remorse. I am secure in the fact that I cannot chase down a critter of any kind, kill it, then eat it. Fish with tartar sauce, anyone?

Sending you my best today as always, and best wishes for the upcoming contest,
Sal XOs

This is very amusing. I have always enjoyed fortunately/unfortunately stories. You picked a good topic and learned where the turkey comes from and I hope it's a fictional story. The kids in my family learned that fact of life when we watched grandma, of all the chickens she could have picked, grabbed our pet chicken and showed us the process of making fried chicken.

Well, thank goodness that didn;t become a tradition. However, your story fits the rules of the contest. the imag4 is perfect, too.
My tiny suggestion would be to make several lines breaks like this [I know you work, your choice.]
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

Fortunately, school was out for Thanksgiving!
Unfortunately, my friends were leaving town.
Fortunately, my parents planned a new tradition.
Unfortunately, they did not buy a turkey.

Fortunately, our neighbor had a turkey farm!
Unfortunately, I did not know what awaited.
Fortunately, the turkeys were funny.
Unfortunately, our task was to catch one.

Fortunately, my brothers chased twelve gobbling turkeys.
Unfortunately, the turkeys eluded them.
Fortunately, the farmer cornered the fattest one!
Unfortunately, we followed them to a large tree stump.

Fortunately, the harvest sun shone on our happy crew.
Unfortunately, that same sun illuminated a sharp ax lodged in the wood.
Fortunately, the farmer pulled out the ax with ease.
Unfortunately, I realized the horror I was about to witness!

Fortunately, I shut my eyes.
Unfortunately, our task was not complete.
Fortunately, the farmer knew what to do.
Unfortunately, we plucked the feathers from the still-warm body.

Fortunately, they came out easily.
Unfortunately, I felt sick.
Fortunately, it was time to go.
Unfortunately, on Thanksgiving Day, my turkey-educated mind could not eat a bite.

Fortunately, there were lots of side dishes to choose from, and turkey catching did not become a family tradition!
