How sad for both of them, Liz. You told this poignant little story well. It seems to be a catch 22 situation. There is so much controversy with the vaccine, people don't know what is right.
Respectfully, Jan

This mother/daughter situation is a stalemate, alas.
I don't think either masks or vaccinations should be mandatory--people can choose to protect themselves or not--why does it matter what others do. Incidentally, my unvaccinated daughter just caught Corona from a vaccinated friend.

This is a sad and tragic outcome for these two individuals. I can't imagine not doing everything I could to spend time with a parent during what could be their last opportunity. I wish them both peace.

I don't get these people who are so total afraid of the vaccine. I have all four of my children who are on that strange page and one is a nurse and another a doctor. They tell me there is something in the vaccine that never leave the body and will kill you in two years. I guess that means the world will have a lot fewer people soon. However in the story you relate the mother may lose the daughter before the daughter loses the mother.

To wear a mask, or not, is everyone's prerogative. Sometimes I think the rationale for making this choice is more complicated than what appears on the surface. Emily's reasons for remaining unvaccinated are valid, but I can't help but wonder if there is something else lurking just below the surface. I'll not speculate as to what that may be, but no matter how one slices it, the decision will take a lasting toll.

Interesting conundrum, Elizabeth.

Peace, Lee

As I understand it, most mandates allow regular testing as an alternative.
I respect your opinion, but a disease that can't reproduce so easily can't kill millions of people.
Anecdotal incidents like your daughter's are ironic, but hardly representative.
I hope she has a mild case. L

Point taken. I chose to get vaccinated and plan to get the booster--I have to wait ten days after I test negative (I'll be tested Monday, per protocol, given that my daughter has Corona.)
"Frequent" testing is an unsatisfactory alternative--false negatives abound given the incubation period. Those who have contracted Corona shortly before the test will be negative; moreover, you can contract Corona right after you take the test.

Yes, you have a good point about testing. Which makes vaccination the preferable alternative. To do nothing strikes me as irresponsible. On the other hand, self-imposed quarantine is another responsible choice.
I'm no stranger to government protest. But in this case, I think the government's actions are for the greater good. Even so, I can understand those who respectfully disagree. Those who refuse to get vaccinated just to be contrary I disagree with.

    So true!

There are a lot of willfully ignorant people who tout absurd conspiracy theories--alas, several here have published "poems" on the theme.

Hi Liz,
Gotcha. At first, I was quite confused. So I read it again, and then understood.
This miserable Covis-Schmovid has caused a lot of discord, hasn't it? There was a man in hospital here a couple of weeks ago. He had the virus, and his family hadn't been vaccinated. They weren't allowed to go in and visit him until he was near death.
So many people, including my own son and daughter-in-law refuse to get one of the vaccines. They don't trust it. Conspiracies abound. Unless people get vaccinated, we are going to continue in this pandemic mode for years to come.
Hugs,
Kimbob

Wow! What a difficult and sad situation for all involved. Emily made her decision and her mom made hers...they don't coincide and that causes heartbreak. Life is so short and the Covid pandemic creates more problems than just the disease.

Hugs, Carol

Since the start of the pandemic, the medical community has been working to make COVID-19 vaccines available to the entire global community and safety has always been a top priority. Being protected from getting sick is important because even though many people with COVID-19 have only a mild illness, others may get a severe illness, have long-term health effects, or even die. But then, getting vaccinated is a personal choice. I wish Emily and her mother the best of health. I can understand. It is a very difficult choice to make. Thanks for sharing!

Hello Liz,
What a truly awful position for Emily to be in. It seems she is between a rock and a hard place.
Zoom has always seemed (to me, as I am quite the technophobe) a poor substitute for interaction in the flesh, but in this case, it is a lifeline.
Your statement that Emily has lost her mother, seems accurate to me... Sorry for your friend and her heartbreaking situation.
Best wishes, Debra :)

That is so sad, nobody wins, one would think love would overcome these things, sheer belligerence would suggest the mum would see her, fear is a terrible thing. Such a shame. Well done, blessings Roy

I can not understand people's resistance to the vaccine. I personally would not blame the hospital if they refused to help save these stubborn people. A great story that shows how selfish Emily is!
