Vaccination War: No Winner

This commentary is so poignant and pertinent to our current situation nothing more need be said. Except, my mother survived Covid-19. She lost her sense of smell and taste for a while. Oh, did I fail to mention she had pneumonia at the time she tested positive. She wore her mask, bathed in hand sanitizer, distanced herself from our family, and self quarantined in her apartment. And she still contracted the virus. One of the few scariest moments in my life. Needless to say my entire family is double vaxed. I could never ever live with the idea that she could be put at risk or worse because of my fear or selfishness. I hope your friend never goes through what we did.

Dreadful about your mother!
Thanks for stopping by. Always nice to see you! It's a stalemate, alas.

There is no winning this war, although the three adults in my household are fully vaccinated because we have a 7-year-old. How not taking a vaccine ever became a political/religious object is so far out I wonder if aliens have invaded.

Hi Liz,
Oh yes, what a mess. Vaccinated or not vaccinated, that is the question! How will we ever know the truth about any of this? This virus has become a political football and that makes me beyond angry. The flu shot was never forced on people and many die of the flu every year. I have a local news app on my cell phone so I can get local news as well as national headlines. That stupid app is nothing but propaganda when it comes to reporting cases of CoVid where people have recently died of the virus. I had to turn my notifications OFF! I must have been swamped with 60 or more cases of CoVid deaths a day....and on closer inspection they were as far away as New Zealand or Russia! I thought I was getting local death cases!
Some on the left at least in the US will stop at nothing to force people against their will to get a vaccine. People everywhere are getting CoVid with a vaccine. It is a conundrum and I am personally one who is twice vaccinated with Pfizer and probably will get a booster when the time comes. But what is this forcing people?
So many elders are sick and unable to visit their loved ones for fear of catching or giving something. I asked my doctor three weeks ago, what she thought and she shook her head and said the vaccine is far from perfect but it is better than nothing at preventing deaths.
I'll go with that.
Always,
Senyai

This mother/daughter situation is a stalemate, alas.
I don't think either masks or vaccinations should be mandatory--people can choose to protect themselves or not--why does it matter what others do. Incidentally, my unvaccinated daughter just caught Corona from a vaccinated friend.

Ah, a very thought-provoking piece for us! Such strange and divided times we are witnessing. So many silent, and not so silent, family battles all around us. I appreciate your thoughtful observations.

Thank you!

Emily needs to get over herself. If she wants to live a long time and thinks she will achieve that by not being vaccinated, her future years will be blighted by knowledge that her mother died without personal comfort from her daughter. Zoom is indeed small consolation for physical presence. Your story powerfully shows how some decisions defy sense. Surely love for her mother should trump her vague and unproven concerns, when there are definite long-term side effects of contracting coronovirus.

What a disaster for Lauren and you. I sure hope it is a mild dose that can be treated at home. Will you be in quarantine? If it was here in NZ you'd both be sent to a managed isolation facility for a specific duration.
-
Chuck as I will get tested Monday.
Given that we are vaccinated, we are not required to quarantine on account of Lauren.
Meanwhile--I'm keeping my distance from her and avoiding contact with others whenever I go outside.
Per protocol, I am permitted to enter enclosed spaces provided I'm masked, which is moot, since I'm not going to stores.
If I test negative Monday the 8th (i.e. after the appropriate incubation period) I am assumed to be in the clear, provided I don't develop symptoms and that I continue to avoid Lauren during her contagious period (ending Saturday, the 13th; 10 days post diagnosis).

Certainly there are distinct opinions on this.
Very touching and moving story that you've written.
We got our boosters today. A woman waiting told us
how her sister contracted the virus through her
adult children, and died within 2 weeks.
I choose to let others choose as they will, and God help
all of us.
Loved this, blessings...

Such a sad story. I understand her mom's fear of getting the virus, and it would make no difference if her immune system is compromised.
As to Emily, I do not feel for her as I would move heaven and earth to see my sick mother including getting a shot or two and wearing masks or even walking on hot coals to see mom.

I think the media has gone overboard in promoting extreme fear of the Coronavirus. They love to play up stories of unvaccinated people who've died of the virus and leap on stories of those who've been vaccinated but get it anyway. How are you supposed to know what to believe? I don't think Emily should be in fear of getting the vaccine. To me, I decided to play it safe and get the vaccine. judi

Ouch! Your daughter certainly didn't need to get the virus. It seems it would be risky for her to get the shots, though. As one of my family's neighbors used to say, "A body just doesn't know what to do." judi

Thank you, dear one for this gut-wrenching story. It is so sad that this world lives in such fear. Surely they could have come to some compromise that would protect them both? I pray this ends soon and leaves us alone.

There is a sadness tot his pandemic that transcends political views or medical advice or mistrust for or against he vaccine... That sadness is the chasm that has widened between family members and close friends, as each lives in fear. Your piece it aptly titled. There are no winners here.
I can't imagine sufficing with a "Zoom" conversation in consoling and supporting my mother--if she were still with me. If I would walk through fire for my loved ones, I'd surely get a vaccination. The distance that will soon separate Emily and her mother will not allow for a "do-over." It's all a corona laced debacle.
