I could comment, but I won't, if one has a critical heart, he affectively puts a blindfold on, one can't understand with the head, it goes from the receiving heart to the head, never the other way around. and it's not bound in law, Jesus is God, no one else was fit to die. I write because I understand, for no other reason but that. Beautifully written Liz, it's a bit funny isn't it, blessings Roy

Wonderful story. Scott muting the TV is brilliant as is your telling of the tale.
Chuck bombarding Scott with CDs is wrong. It would only turn Scott off as you can see by the "blizzard." It does not work and for Chuck, it is more about himself trying to save Scott than Scott's belief.
Scott has the right to his own opinion and Chuck is not going to persuade him otherwise.

Both are interesting characters and both are earnest in their belief systems. Scott may be more of a "thinker" but the fact is that God would not be God if we could understand Him and all His ways. We are given enough info in the Bible to see His character but there is always a tension between what we perceive as His justice and His love, amongst other things. Maybe Scott would benefit by just reading the Bible for himself, or even just the New Testament, rather than be turned off by man's preaching. And Chuck? Shouldn't pester poor Scott. No-one can ever be nagged into faith! Very thought provoking write. You'll get some interesting reviews I am sure.

We are given enough info in the Bible to see His character but there is always a tension between what we perceive as His justice and His love, amongst other things. Maybe Scott would benefit by just reading the Bible for himself, or even just the New Testament, rather than be turned off by man's preaching. And Chuck? Shouldn't pester poor Scott. No-one can ever be nagged into faith! Very thought provoking write. You'll get some interesting reviews I am sure.

I read this as an admitted "collapsed Catholic"--yet a true believer in God. Scott's struggle with the logic of omnipotence allowing such suffering is familiar. I don't understand it either. I smiled at Scott's gentle " suggestion" that severe weather ought to keep Chuck home. It IS best to err. on the side of caution! Sometimes silence provides the best fellowship. This is a thought provoking write, Liz. It may rattle a few chains. I see kindness of biblical proportion in Scott's actions. Likewise in Chuck's!

Scott is unconventional for sure. He and I are in accord, despite my aversion to worshipping God--there is no possible "explanation" that would satisfy me.

As I've said before, you have the most interesting friends. And you characterize them beautifully. I love your description of their belief (non-belief ?) systems. Each one has a valid and logical reason for believing as they do and that just makes the story that much more interesting. The climax of your story is just great. The resolution, while humorous is a bit of a let down, perhaps because we already understood from the previous statements that Scott was feeling a little put-upon and was tired of Chuck trying to evangelize him. I did like the use of demoralized in this context - funny.

Change the last paragraph. Go straight to Scott giving the forecast and then describe what he does afterwards? Capitalize on the word demoralize to describe how Scott feels about his trick? Have Scott somehow convey to Chuck his exhaustion with his methods or better, somehow turn the tables on him? I don't know. It seems an awful mild response for something that's been building so long.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I can't quite get the gist of your suggestions. Do you mean to say Scott is demoralized about pulling his trick? He's demoralized at not getting answers to his religious questions. Scott "turns the tables" on Chuck by pulling the trick. Do you consider that too mild a response? There is nothing in particular he does afterward. I'll run this by a couple of others to see what they make of it. I appreciate your taking the time to consider the possibilities!

Not at all. I like demoralizing because of its connection to the word moral which Chuck seems to be trying to school Scott in. Morality, however, is in the eyes of the beholder and sometimes very far away from spirituality. The more "moral" Chuck tries to make him, the more demoralized Scott becomes. I think saying what he does afterwards may say a lot about Scott.

Sometimes the missionaries will show up during the worst snow storm so they expect you will give in due to the bad weather and you feel sorry for them. During one of the coldest winter day, someone from a phone service knocked on our door trying to sell us an alternative phone service. We almost give in until he asked us for our social security number. We decided that's too much.

You have expressed very well the age old dilemma of God's love vs suffering in the world and the seeming violence of a son on the cross. I hear you. The dilemma has perplexed me: how could a God of love let my sister be abused? Sometimes I too want a respite from the easy answers.
