I enjoyed your tale of two cities... Scott and Chuck.

Maybe you should tell Scotty that a better question might be:
"Why does a holy God care about us at all when we continually sin and disobey?" It's because He loves us that much. His goal is to save us from Hell, that place He prepared for Lucifer (Satan) and the fallen angels. That's why He sent His Son to this earth... that we might be saved. It was the only way to do it. We can never obey the Ten Commandments, not in a million years. God knew it. It's not God who's the "osnof@b!t(h"... it's us. We caused God to go the distance, and send Christ to die on Calvary.
All I can say is: "God Bless Chuck!"
But I know how Scott feels. When I was 22 years old, or so, my Uncle Ralph or Uncle Bob would come to the house for a visit. They had just found religion at Calvary Temple in Saint John, and were bent on getting the whole family saved. They'd come in the front door, and I'd run out the back door! It isn't easy to surrender to God.
Poor Scotty! I think he is trying to get to Heaven by doing good works. But all he has to do is ask the Lord to come into his heart. God isn't bold. He won't push Himself on anyone. Quite the contrary. Time to decide, Scott!

Scott is unconventional for sure! He isn't trying to get into heaven--he hopes for oblivion.

I enjoyed this post. I have to admit I can understand Scott's point of view. No one likes to be constantly hit in the face with someone else's idea of faith or political agenda. To me, either is an immediate turn off. Your friend Scott sounds like someone that one could have interesting philosophical discussions with. I always look forward to your posts. You never fail to entertain me!

I enjoyed this post. I have to admit I can understand Scott's point of view. No one likes to be constantly hit in the face with someone else's idea of faith or political agenda. The Bible thumpers can be infuriating. It's interesting that Scott does work for the churches and hosts the Baptist missionaries but is still a skeptic. He is long-suffering. He not only endures Sarah's assaults on his vegetables but Chuck's attempts at bringing religious enlightenment to Scott. Funny conclusion to the story. Weather can be used as an excuse just so many times. judi

Suddenly, because I cried because my son's body was in the ground, I was an atheist. I should just accept that his soul was in heaven. I agreed, but the mother in me still didn't want her baby buried in the cold ground. He could never understand it... and I didn't really care what he thought. Like Scott I guess, I believed in God and that's all that really mattered. And I grieved my way!

LOL Those two are very interesting. I am surprised they even get along in the same room together. I'm surprised the missionaries haven't converted Scott or he hasn't kicked them out fir trying.

I honestly think I could probably like Chuck and Scott. I don't know how much of each one I could take or for how long, but I know I couldn't stand one of their religious debates. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Haha, that was a fun twist for Scott to think of. Not sure Chuck bought it, but it made for a good little story, Liz. I enjoyed reading this one. You characterized Scott's beliefs well. I understand where he is coming from.

The differening opinions of these two, and Chuck in trying to enlighten someone who is insistant on clinging to his conclusion is a lot like trying to change someone political opinion. It must be frustrating for both of them. I think Scott works too hard at trying not to offend anyone.

Can always count on you for an interesting read. Everyone who believes in God does it his/her own way. These two have certainly polar belief systems. I love your writing - simple, straightforward and sometimes tongue in cheek.
