Being a dog lover but not owning one now I understood exactly how you feel about dogs I always talk to one if I see or hear them. My children have dogs and I always have dog treats ready for when they call or if I visit them. Having had dogs in the past I know how heart retching it is when a pet dies. One of my granddaughters has a Dachshund and he rules the chairs, but it is no problem as he is small. Having said all that I really enjoyed it and thanks for sharing. Kooky.

    Hi Kooky,
Yes, dogs really enrich our lives. It sounds like you're a real dog lover too. I'm content to spend time with my daughter's dog or my neighbors, all the benefits with none of the expense.
    Blessings

Rigby was beautiful, and I am glad you won the beautiful creatures contest. He is watching you from heaven. It will be great when you see him again.

Thank you so much. It would be wonderful to see him again. I loved him dearly. For all of his demands, he was still a great dog.
    Have a blessed day.

This is funny. It will draw the reader in: I once got in trouble with my wife because of a dog. Apparently I had been calling
"Margaret " in my sleep..."The only Margaret I know is Willie Grant's dog." & "One day my daughter came to visit The no dog rule went out the window." & "My daughter left, and Rigby stayed." This is delightful and poignant at the same time. I will always miss my little terrier mix whose stage name is Sweet Puppy in Be Wee With Bea. I talk to her everyday.

    Hello Liz,
Anyone who has had a dog and lost them knows the pain that the owners go through. It's like losing a member of the family. They are so dependent on us and can bring us such joy. Thanks for reviewing and commenting on the story.
    Blessings.

I understand this piece. I never wanted a dog either, much like this story. I loved dogs, but I had retired and was busy. The daughter brought me one, and it lived with me for 15 years. I hope this does well in the contest.

    Hello Ben,
Thanks so much for the review. Dogs have a way of working their way into our lives. I wish he was still alive, but in the last few years he was getting less active and I was spending almost as much on his meds as I was my own. We all get old I guess. Thanks for dropping by.

Yes, I hated to lose her but she was old and in bad health.

Wonderful essay. It perfectly explains how you can hardly remember life before your dog came into it. I am a dachshund owner (2), in my case, so this essay has a special place in my heart because I know they are hungry little beasts and also very bossy! The details about the treats to reward potties and how you had to swap out carrots is an endearing snippet into the loving relationship you guys had. I would have liked to have read a little more about what your dachshund liked to do...mine lives to play ball. You did a wonderful job on this essay, perfectly described losing them at the end and how they can't be replaced.

Thanks so much for your kind review. I wish that the contest had allowed for more words, but I was limited to 300 if I recall correctly, and I used them all. Rigby never liked to chase a ball. When he was young he would get his toys and chew on them until they were useless. It took less than a day usually. Once, my wife bought him a toy that was made out of firehose, supposedly indestructable- he chewed threw it in several days. He loved grabbing underwear from the clothes basket and running through the house with it where he would hide under the table and chew on them. It was funny (to me) to see him charging through the living room with a bra dragging between his legs. Jan wasn't so amused. I miss him terribly, but I've decided to be content to just walk or babysit my neighbors dog. Thanks again.

Aha! I love it when someone succumbs to loving an animal. Rigby was sent for you to love, and you had many years with him. There will never be another Rigby, but there's someone out there waiting to be loved, too.

Thanks for your kind review. I'd love to have another dog, but I just won't allow myself to get one. I take my neighbor's dog out for walks and am considering going to the shelter to walk those as well.

In years past, I've always had dogs and cats together. These last years, though, it seems I'm to take care of cats. I've tried volunteering at the shelter, but it breaks my heart to leave them with them hoping to be taken home.

Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us. I happen to be a dog lover and in every novel I've written there is at least one dog and in more than one chapter the dog took center stage. LOL Right now we happen to own a Dachshund (please check your spelling), Harley, and I understand how they take over the household. LOl Good luck with the contest.

Thanks Barbara for your kind review and catching the spelling error. I looked up the spelling in the dictionary and still mis-spelled it! You're right about taking over the household, I guess I wouldn't have it any other way.

I understand completely. Rugby would have been so lovable and with plenty of personality and loyalty as well. They are so much a part of the family. Beautifully told story.
Best wishes in the contest.

Thanks Wendy for your kind review. He was really a sweet dog. He used to hop up onto the back of the couch and look out the window and keep an eye on the street out front. I miss him terribly.

What a sweet story about your dog, Rigby. I'm not surprised that your no-dog rule went out the window. All you needed was Rigby. I believe there's a person out there for every dog. Good luck with the contest.

Hello Patty, thanks for the kind review. It always breaks my heart to hear of dogs who have been abandoned or abused. If I could, I'd adopt all of them.
