This is a heartfelt and emotional expression of love, aloneness, memories, and sadness. Your words are well chosen to make the reader aware of how you feel. I'm sorry for your loss, but appreciate your thought-provoking message.

I am so sorry about the unexpected loss of your beloved Zoe. I understand that last stanza/verse too well. The poem is well written, and the message is clearly stated. I have no advice for mourning, and I would not give it if I did. Mourning for each individual is a very personal journey. I can only say that I understand the sadness and the quiet.

Was Zoe your wife? I am so sorry for your loss. You did a great job explaining grief. I resonate with the feelings you expressed. Losing a loved one makes you realize how short life really is.

I am normally not a fan of non-rhyming poetry but the depth of this poem was so moving and such a tribute, I couldn't help but admire it. I found it well written and I enjoyed the message.

Excellent free verse form that brings up feelings. Since I lsot my husband in April, I can relate to your words. "Fills the night with emptiness of might" are great words. I too, feel the quiet in the house since my husband died.

This is a beautiful poem about your loss. I love your phrasing. My condolences.

It is true that we often undervalue the love that is given us when it is too late. Sometimes, even when a person has been ill, the finality of death still hits us.

Takes my breath away. No surprise to see the "exceptional" ratings. Simple format. Choice words. Lack of punctuation absolutely correct. Sorry for the content; appreciative of the reach. Thank you....

The six stars are well-deserved. Beautiful poem and I hope you won this contest. The cadence, the imagery and the feelings, all are a wonderful tribute to your late wife. I wish you peace and happiness as life goes on for a little-bitty while. ann

Thank you, I came in second in the contest, first writing contest I ever entered. By the way we are neighbors, I live in Allen, Texas.

    WOW! Neighbors.

I was on Fanstory for a while, left and came back recently. I lost my first husband in 2003 as explained in my story, remarried in 2006 and Randall died last December as result of Covid.

So, I have had 54 years of 2 really great guys and that's what I try to focus on. Writing is therapeutic and I thoroughly enjoy it.

What's your story -- outside of your story which tells of your late wife passing so poignantly -- if you care to share. If not, that's okay too!! Don't mean to be nosey.

    Take care. Ann

I noticed you signed up as a fan. There are two more stories I have up that will fill in a few gaps. Memoirs of the Baptist Church and Christmas Presents Past. I will be promoting the Christmas story in December because I entered in the Christmas story contest. I have been retired for 16 years. In 2015 we downsized from a large house on over acre with 200 trees in Flower Mound and built a house in Lantana, that was close by. This past summer I decided to down size again and sold my Lantana house and bought a new condo in Allen for 55 and over. Of course I just barely qualified by 240 months. No kids, but closer to one of Zoe's nephews and his wife.

I will take a look at the two stories you mentioned. Do you live alone? --Noticed all of the downsizing. I assume Zoe was your wife? I love the name.

I live alone, and have done no downsizing --bought this house when my 1st husband died and those dreams of RV traveling were put on hold. Probably never move. I do still work, but slowing it down a bit. Taking off the next few days for my birthday and spending it with my niece whose birthday is the day after mine. Hope to find a little time to write. I also have an entry in the Christmas Story Contest, so I guess we will be battling it out there! lol.

If you get bored or have any interest, a good part of my life is written somewhere in my portfolio.

Enjoyed chatting. Now going to read your stories ann

We underestimate and undervalue many things only to be realized their real and true value only after we have lost them. I learn from your poem that we should value, especially our relationships. Thanks for sharing and all the very best in the contest, Kit.
