Christmas memories are the best. That was pretty sneaky of your parents to get a book under your pillow. My daughter was around eleven when we sat her down to explain Santa to her. My husband said we needed to tell her something and she replied What? That you guys are Santa? She had known but didn't want to say anything because she thought she'd get less presents. Of course, we swore her to secrecy so her younger brother didn't find out yet. Now they're all grown up and Christmas is a little different. I'm sorry for your loss of your dear wife. 45 years is a great achievement. I hope your memories are a great comfort.

An interesting story. The start is a nice set-up for the rest of the story. The imagery is good. The language is conversational and warm as befitting to a Christmas tale. The flow is good.
Suggestion:
I would suggest that color, sound, and smell be incorporated. I desire the smell of nutmeg, the crunch of peanut brittle, The tinsel, green, and gold, the smell of pine. Maybe even the nip of cold.
All in all a good read. Thanks for sharing.
