Terry, great memories for sure! You might change the following into two sentences. - I liked to read even then, and was astonished, "The Night before Christmas."
For this sentence - When Zoe and I got married we lived over 300 miles away, but we made a point of always visiting either just before or at Christmas. - maybe put a comma after married, and say - away from your parents.
When you wrote - By the early 1990's, the company my friend Kirby and I had helped to start - if you were the only partners, you might just say
- my friend and I started.
I can see, you were a "man". Congrats and have a great Christmas season.

A delightful memoir that celebrated the various pasts of your life. Above all, you wrote an inspiring message, and that was the true meaning of Christmas and love for another, and giving rather than receiving. Good Luck in the contest.

It is a well written story with a perfect flow of narratives about Christmas and this is an excellent entry for the contest. It got me interested from beginning to end. I always like to read family hardships and later the sweet reward of success. Well done and good luck!

This story brought the memories of past Christmas past and the sadness for those gone now, and we have to celebrate Christmas without them.
Still, I do remember the joy of those days and the love and closeness of our family.'
Appreciated your input on us kids not realizing how frugal the early Christmases were but now we can see how our parents scraped and deprived themselves so us kids could have a good Christmas.
Cheers, irish

She fanned herself with the certificate and said "Oh my, I am going to lose fifteen pounds before I spend a cent!" Three months later (having gained 3 pounds) she went on a shopping spree of a lifetime. This made me laugh A LOT! A wonderful Christmas story I loved it so amusing! Love and regards Meia xxx

Super sweet memories and story for the Christmas contest. I'm sorry for your lost, but I see Zoe is very much alive in your memory. You are the same age as my brother, Robert. He is my only living brother out of the five.

Sending you my best today as always, blessings for peace and joy at Christmas, warmth and protection, and the nearness of Christ.
Be blessed, Terry.
Sally :))

A nice post for the Christmas season. A nice blend of boyhood memories and then more contemporary times with you and Zoe. I think this will be a strong entry for the contest. I entered as well. Bill

That was a lovely Christmas story about Christmasses past. We were the same, too poor to buy much, but what we received us children loved. I loved the weight loss that turned into a gain!! I think we've all done that. This is a wonderful contest entry and I wish you lots of luck! Have a very happy christmas and a healthy, happy New Year. :)) Sandra

Thank you for sharing about the Christmas presents that your family enjoyed over the decades! What comes out loud and clear is the love behind each gift. Enjoyed the humor, too, about the weight gain and the shopping spree. I think Neiman Marcus was just a place to look and not buy! Lol. Best wishes in the contest!
