Hi Shauna,
This poem teaches two important lessons. Old people are really wise some times. And, listening is a good habit to have. You will find and keep more friends listening than talking or gossiping.
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Congrats on winning the contest.

It's so easy to see why this poem won the contest! You have told a great story with a powerful moral, a lesson all need to learn about exercising the mouth less and the ears more. :-)

I remember that old wise poem. You did a great job of representing that same theme of holding our tongues. Although the rhymes are appreciated and commended, I could easily see this written as a story, a fable of sorts. I used to love those when I was a kid. I always looked forward to the moral of the story. I love how you included that at the end!
Well done!

Thank you for your nice review, Tina! Oh, good idea! I will have to try writing a fable sometime. I used to love reading those, too. Sending good wishes your way as we wrap November!

Truly wonderful. What a pity our politicians don't practice Ollie's wisdom. The rhyme and meter here flowed beautifully. I wish more poetry on Fanstory was this good.

this is a fine expansion of the old owl poem. I first heard of it when teaching in England and the final line went 'Why can't I be like that wise old bird'. As I remember the English version as the owl sat in an oak but effectively it is the same poem. Congratulations on winning the contest.

This is a striking image: ""Now hold on," Grandpa said one day. He stopped his rocker quick." I love wordplay. This one is fun: "what a hoot!" I can see why this won: "Though Ollie's gramps was no spring chick and long of beak, it's true." I need to take this advice seriously: ""Try list'ning more and talking less about your friend. This is well done.

Aw, this is so cute! And so true! Sometimes we're so focused on us and our response that we forget about other people and how to listen. Great job on this piece! Good luck in the contest.

This is a very well written poem you have penned for the Old People Changing the World writing prompt. You used very good descriptive and very true words. Very nice imagery and very good moral, especially for this day and age. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

You sure deserve an excellent rating on your poem. Liked reading it. The grandpa gave very good advice in this poem. If we listened more to each other, probably life would be better.
