This will draw the reader in to know the motivation. But it will create more questions: "The death of Maria Adler began the onslaught" Another allusion for us to research: "Such as the Caesar cipher. The easiest one to break," Ballister said." The reader will be back with this ending line:
""You don't believe him?" Ballister mocked.
"Not one word," Dutton confessed saying, "Adler's actions speak otherwise."

This is actually the first chapter of this novelette that I've read.
It reminds me of a period as a child over 60 years ago when my mother used to read detective magazine.
I picked up one and started to look at it and put it down right away because it was too graphic.
Nice job as usual Brett and thanks for sharing.

Sometimes, I think we have all had menacing thoughts. The difference in us and Adler: we refuse to act on them. But I often wonder how nice people can write such deranged characters, unless there's a hint of them within. Wish I had a six. Thanks for sharing.

Appreciate that. Took a tumor out of my left arm last Saturday. Cut a 5-1/2 X 4-1/2 piece out of the arm to do so. 20 stitches to close. Still have a tumor behind the left ear to be removed. Need all the prayers can get.

I'm so sorry that you are going through all this. Hope they get the tumor from behind your left ear soon. But remember, hang tough. I've had eight surgeries in the last three years. A tumor from my left hand and four from my spine. The others were on my back. And on November 8th they are operating on the left and right sides of my heart. Who ever called this the Golden Years should be shot. I'll be praying for you every day! Keep me updated on how things are going for you. The good Lord does grant miracles!

Ballister propped his Tony Lamas up on the edge of the desk and asked, (You can put a period after 'desk' and omit 'and asked,')
"Allegedly, he screamed so loud the family across the hall from them heard his distinct words. (you can omit 'from them' it's not needed)

I like the fact that you've taken us back to the beginning of Adler's insane behavior, Brett. Or is it really? I agree with Dutton. There is something missing. You've done a superb job of conveying it and continuing to build the suspense.

Since Dutton doesn't believe Adler's story about finding his wife dead that must mean Duttor believes that Adler killed her as well. The is a good mystery and I will e reading to find out how this case will be solved.
