What a sad poem. It is emotion packed and has good imagery of what it is like to be a refugee from a wartorn land. I like the metaphors and the the use of alliteration and consonance.
Congrats on placing third in the contest.
Keep writng and stay healthy

Congrats on your prize for this heartrending poem--vividly evocative of horrors of war. Thanks for title for context--fine work in STUV--glad I caught up to this. Cheers. LIZ

Such a sad, sad poem! But a fitting comment on the way things were left in Afghanistan. I hope you don't know someone who was left behind. It is bad enough to see the scenes we were shown on television. I actually did shed torrents of tears. ;"( Your poem is very well done and fits so smoothly into the alphabet you chose, no one would even notice it was an ABC poem. A well-deserved congratulations on your second-place finish in this contest. There were a lot of entries you had to rise above. Good job!!

Thank you, MissMerri for your thoughtful and kind words of support. To answer your question; no I don't have any personal attachment to the tragic events occurring in Afghanistan. However, I was moved by one particular event concerning the US drone attack that wiped out members of an innocent family, which was the foundation of this verse by that I wrote. All wars are hell, yet they are just a blip on our tv screens in our safe environment over here. We no nothing of the ongoing suffering of those caught up in war's aftermath. Maybe if we did we might take more action to prevent wars. Yet it is as old as mankind so I am not too hopeful.

Wow! That is one powerful, heart- and gut-wrenching poem, and you managed to write it within the required format. Living under the Taliban is terrifying enough, but it is even worse to be hunted by them.

There is no doubt that many tragedies will emerge from recent events in Afghanistan and you do a great job of conveying a glimpse of one in this ABC Poem.

The first three lines - sadness, tears, despair - are explained by the final two where hope has been replaced by disaster.

Well done!

Steve
