Hi Liz,
I'd say that's a handsome tip, almost 27%. She didn't deserve it. I won't give less that 15% tip, no matter how badly we're treated. But how high I go depends on the service. Our favorite waitress at AJ's (we go there for breakfast quite often) gets about 23% for a tip. Most often, we are treated well when we go out. My favorite restaurant is Montana's... great ribs , with honey garlic sauce! And a baked potato.
But your waitress didn't deserve any tip, in my humble opinion. I was told long ago, when I worked as a teenager at the Grand Bay Drive-In ... the customer is ALWAYS RIGHT! That's a hard lesson to learn.
Nicely penned!
Hugs,
Kimbob

That was really generous of you. Both of you were well matched in the department of snapping and arguing. Anyway she deserved it and you are a great soul

Your generosity was much appreciated, I'm sure. Jim most often pays when we eat out, since I buy all the groceries and prepare the food when we eat in. He tends to undertip. When I sometimes go out with my girlfriends and am obliged to pay my own way, tipping some how gets me flustered. I either tip way more than I planned, or find myself short of change so end up leaving far less than I'm comfortable with. I feel guilty for days.

Well Elizabeth,
I fear that you were more generous than I might have been in the same circumstances. Going out to eat is supposed to be a pleasant experience. I try to keep in mind that if the food is less than up to my expectations, the wait staff shouldn't suffer for it. However, a snotty attitude would probably not get the waitress too much of a tip from me. Nonetheless, the next time I go out to eat, I hope I can replay your story in my mind and let it help me to determine the tip. On a different note, you're sending me to the dictionary with concatenation, Re'moulade and mesclun. I thought the last was a drug that got lots of people in trouble. Have a blessed night.

Sometimes waitpeople only want to bring what is strictly menu-born. But, like you, I hate sauces and "stuff" all over and under my food. Gimme a lobster and fries - period! You were so generous, especially with less than pleasant attitude. I wanna be your waitress - only can't walk and run down tables, chairs, people and sundry else - so no tip for me!!

Liz,

Wow. I used to wait tables and I was a magnificent waitress. I would have LOVED to wait on you. I never understood how the bad waitresses would still get good tips and GOOD waitresses could end up with bad tippers. Now I know. It's just the good hearted ones are gonna tip well regardless. Thanks!

The waitress seemed snippy to me, but I wasn't there. You did a good job, Liz, giving readers all of the facts. Your tip was more than generous for how you felt towards her.
Respectfully, Jan

Very generous and kind of you towards that waitress. It is a tough job and they have to put up with a lot of crap with some not leaving tips. She might have had a day that she had it up to here.
Actually my sister worked in a hash house known for its rude waitresses
Well done in telling the story and being objective.

I can understand. Fifteen dollars is more than twenty percent so I'd say you did all right. I feel we're paying for a service so as long as we're not rude or making unreal requests we should be treated well. Thank you for sharing.

I tip somewhere between 20 and 40% other than exceptional occasions when the waiter/waitress go above and beyond, I've even more. Yes, I'm a sucker sometimes too, but never as easy as you. LOL. I might have tipped your server 20%, but not without a note to express my displeasure. But she probably wouldn't have read or cared anyway. Thanks for sharing.
