This is an outstanding story, well-written and touching. The story of this kind of transformation choked me up. I would like to know more about this story, is it biographical?

Retirement is tough if you love the job you have, but here in the story the support of so many loved ones kind of eased the pain.

During my career as a Correctional Officer, I saw many young lives lost to gang peer-pressure and the ever present drugs. I spoke with many youth and church groups and always hoped I had made a difference in at least one life.

Good work!

Thanks Irish, for the score and review. I appreciate both.

This is a true story with a few changes. It was not in Detroit. I used Detroit because most people have heard of it. I was the arresting officer and neighbor. Ricky lived across the street. I also didn?t spend my career in charge of the explorers. I knew Ricky from a very young age. He was a great kid and smart. He just got in with the wrong crowd. His dad?s death took a huge toll on him and family. His mother was a very private person. None of us neighbors knew how bad she was doing finically.
All I did was get him headed in the right direction. At my retirement party Ricky gave a speech that brought everyone, me included to tears. He told his story and how I changed his life. I didn't see it that way. I just helped a good kid.

His retirement party is the one in the story. I asked his wife if I could give a short speech. It was my chance to highlight his story. It was a big crowd that night, with civilians almost outnumbering police officers.

Rarely does someone in yours and my position know the impact we make on people?s lives.

Wow, what a story! I think you have enough material for many stories from your real-life experiences, hope I can read them all!

This is a wonderful story. I've never known but one police officer and that was my uncle who was a Detroit police officer. He was a good man that I didn't see often since we lived in Mississippi. He was sort of rough talking and as a little kid, he scare me always wearing a gun. Anyway, your story has given me new respect for police officers.

I recently decided to write stories based on actual events that involving me. My goal is to show people the side of police officers not seen on the nightly news. This one is a perfect example of police officers that quietly give back to their communities. The officer in this story was a good friend of mine. What a story he had to tell.

If you are interested, I have three true police stories. I am sure you would enjoy reading them.

JUST ANOTHER NIGHT?A young man attempts to kill himself.

    ONE COP?ONE SANTA?ONE CAR?Santa Claus in a police car.

ONE MISTAKE ALMOST GOT ME KILLED?A domestic fight almost
    costs me my life.

Thank you so much for reading my story.

This is a great story, it pulled me in and tossed me around. There was some confusion in my mind as to how much of it was true, as your family structure seems to have changed from the last story of yours I read. But I don't care. You weave a good tale and keep your reader interested. Keep up the good work!

    Hi Katherine,
I am sorry for the confusion. This story is about a good friend of mine. We met when we were younger and played hockey in a league for police officers. When I first heard his story. It was so incredible. Sadly, he passed away two years after he retired.

Don't worry about the confusion, it's me being pedantic. I think your choice to write about true events is a good one. You bring such tales alive, and make them exciting. I can see you as a biographer. Good luck. Kate xx
