I enjoyed your story, they could picture everything you said because of the words that you chose to describe everything. What a fun time and bonding experience that you had with your brother. One thing that I noticed is that you may want to change the word "our to are"
(We our much older now)
Thanks for sharing your story.

I am from a racing family and racing fuel runs through my veins. Brings back so many memories. You did a great job with the prompt. You made use of your senses, which brought a vision of the track to my mind.

I especially appreciate your review. It means a lot to me when some one such as yourself enjoyed it.
I was not in a racing family, but my dad was a pretty good backyard mechanic. Everything I know about cars came from my dad.

You are blessed to have built up a fund of strong exciting memories of times with your brothers. You could use these to write a memoir of your times together through the ages. I think it could interest a lot of people.

    Katherine,
Thank you for the review and the suggestion. I think it is an excellent idea for a book. I will say this. Being the youngest was a blessing at times, other times it was sheer hell.
One quick story. All three of us went to the same Catholic school. That?s where the problem came in. Don the oldest was a bit of a troublemaker. Johnny the middle one was the good one. Well here comes me. The first day in class the nuns would ask me which brother I was most like. Up until fourth grade I said, Don. In fourth grade and beyond I was like John. That at least got me through the first two or three weeks. By then the nuns realized I was the second coming of Donald Frohm.

You see, padded out a bit that would make a great essay. You have a good memory and a gift for detail. Go for it. If nothing else it will please your family. My brother passed away in 2013 and I have been writing his memoirs (it's taken me quite a while as it took time to come to terms with it all). They have been a great source of pleasure to my mother as well as my remaining brother.

Great story! You wrote the family warmth and value, and I'm sure almost everyone can relate to that extra special memory that survives the trials, tribulations and testing of the years.
The sights and smells at the racetrack jumped right off the page, I could picture myself right there in the middle.
Remember Richard Petty, Junior Johnson, and Fred Lorenzen, three racing legends.
Thanks for sharing, irish

Irish, thank you as always for the kind words.
I am fortunate to have two older brothers that watched over me as I grew up.
No family is perfect. Mine certainly was not. But memories like this one and many more helped us work through some rough times.

A sweet memory for the contest entry. My oldest brother took me to the Daytona 500, a day I'll never forget.

A few improvements for your entry.

-Character A's are present in your text throughout. These can be easily removed in edit.

-"... dirty old pair [of] racing goggles...."

-When they waved the checkered flag[,] You need a comma here in place of the period. Think of a comma as a sentence hinge; or reason for pause; a period is the end.

-"Although disappointed that Richard Petty had not won[;] I had one of the best days of my life. Semicolon here connects two independent thoughts.

I hope this is helpful and readies you for the contest. Sending you my best today as always,
Sally :))

What a memory - I met Evil Kneval and that was my big thrill - the way he ran around the arena - leaning so far over. He signed an autograph for me, which I kept till it disintegrated.
Childhood is magic!

I don?t think I missed any of Evil?s jumps. Especially if ABC?s Wide World of Sports carried them.
    I agree childhood is magic!

It seems there are many relational memories, some very vivid some, a little harder to find and enjoy. But nevertheless less life would be much duller, if we walked and could remember little, beautifully written, I think we can all relate to this, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy. My two big brothers were the best. I could write a book about just those two. 😂

I enjoyed your story very much for the excitement you conveyed and for the bond that your older brother cultivated with you through motor racing.

I think you meant to write 'goggles' rather than 'googles'.

Thank you for the kind words. I had a chuckle when I saw googles 😊 Thank you for spotting that and reading this story.

Your 'googles' gave me a chuckle too. Thanks for the reviewing nomination!

Your story is very good and appeals to me as I spent my early years at the stock car track with my father, who kept the cars running. How fortunate you were that tickets were available. You did a good job of describing the joys of the day.

Carol, What great memories you must have with your father.

My father was a pretty good mechanic. He did most of the work on our cars. I learned everything I know about repairing cars from helping him.
