Great stuff, so much of the English language is pronounced nothing like it is spelt due I think to the fact that we have adapted so many words from other languages. I know this is especially so in England. A lovely read which made me smile. Kooky

That's so unfair of your "genius" teacher who put you in charge of "reading the spelling list" after you've been absent for so long! Yes, those French words are not easy unless you took French. I always chuckled at Bugs Bunny's pronunciation.

What the author experienced is common to most of us. We all have experienced being tested for spelling and pronunciation of difficult words. A credit should be given to the teacher to chose the word "rendezvous." Certainly it wasn't an easy test.

Charming story. This may be a winner. Many adults-though they've heard the word-may not have seen it written and thus would pronounce it phonetically too. Another example: Men-age-a-troyce. Or the converse--being asked to spell a word you've heard, hence: Men-aaaj-a-twa(t)! Delightful piece.

Thank you, Robert. Yes, seeing his face for the first time was thrilling! I can see such resemblance to my grandfather (in HIS grandfather). But photos tempt us--we want more. I have so many questions I wish I could ask him and places to show him. Maybe one day! Thank you for your review! It was fun to hear you have experienced similar things.
