A conundrum, no? How can this be overcome? Sounds like the best thing for them to do is work from home, as consultants. What is Lauren's forte and what is Mick's. Can they amalgamate them into a business?

Lauren was a nurse; he did various jobs involving lifting, etc.

Is this biographical? If so, would like to hear more about your daughter and her MS. Car wreck is obviously a very familiar part of my life. loved the last line "Game over."

Sad but sometimes we come to a fork in the road...do we continue to battle and struggle to hang on to the few threads we have between us or do we stop, and choose another way. So true...the end of the road!

Hugs, Carol

You should ENTER this into the true story flash fiction contest. I think it would fit. You could run if needed. Your close is GREAT. Really strong. Of course you're a good writer but the storytelling aspect of how you write is so cool. I love it.

This gets a SIX from me bc it Would win the contest.

Game over is good preventive medicine against years of misgivings and grief.
One grumpy person makes another.
I like that.
Two grumpy people make a fetid cloud of unhappines.
Spreading like

Hello Elizabeth,
For better or for worse, I'm back. This isn't exactly what I was expecting to read from you- it lacks your usual biting sense of humor. Our children are an extension of ourselves and so it's natural to want to defend their positions I suppose, although I don't see you doing this here. I've got seven kids, and I've found that I don't really want their problems to be my problems. I hope that they work this out, or at the very least they leave you out of their problems. Good luck, and have a blessed night.

This is one helluva situation where the buck stops in a desperate way that is impacting a love match, as money (either too much of it or not enough of it) very often does. It seems to be a trail of dependency - Lauren on you and Mick on Lauren, and therefore on you. He comes across as very selfish to me, but then I have never been damaged and unemployed and subjected to a settlement claim dragging out. Lauren's funds being drained down to nothing in support of Mick would never keep the love alive - it would drain away too. Game over, as you say.

Sadness comes in many forms. But what buckles the knees is adult children who fail to recognize the blessings and opportunities before them EVEN WITH a serious impediment that has manifested, metastasized the end of the road is here. Bullshit!

Not your writing of course, it stands as a beacon on the hill.

Yes, it's a dilemma. I don't see a satisfactory settlement here, Li. That issue will always loom over their relationship. It's none of my business, but I hope both are able to agree on a solution that works for both of them.
Respectfully, Jan

Another well written tale. It is very hard for any two people to resolve money issues. It is even more difficult for disabled people who have limited funds. So sorry your daughter has MS. Rough one.
