This is an interesting story. It's well written and kept my interest the entire way through. I was surprised to find the little old gray-haired woman was a Lt. and a spy. Sad that the guy on the other end evidently was found out by the enemy. Glad the dog and the 'lady' got out alive. Good luck!

Your story was excellent, and yes, thought provoking and meaningful. The quality of writing was very well done, building up to the inevitable but sad conclusion. Well done, and best wishes for your entry.

This story, Day is Done, follows this well-executed surveylance detail through their secret mission of reporting enemy movements. Sad that the war was bigger than the heroic efforts of these two men and a dog.

I was raised in a military family and deeply appreciate the sacrifices so many have made to protect freedom. Your story is heartfelt and I am glad that you have shared it. Best wishes.

I liked it. I liked the dog because they are so smart. So the old woman was going to a place of safety? War is an awful thing and what makes people so curel is caused by the devil. God never wanted it that way but one day He will get what He had planned and satan will be locked up in hell forever. He knows his time is short.

"The large black dog" is repeated too many times. Just write "dog" until the end of your great story. Wait a moment, you need to have him talk to the dog. I got it. Call the dog by name. The guy is lonely so he will talk to the dog.

Oh yes, this is your story . . . Just some suggestions.

Thank you for your thoughtful review and suggestions. Sorry for the doom & gloom; but, it is hard to paint a beautiful picture of war. - Anonymous Author

This is a vivid and unique war story. I like how the soldier is disguised as an old woman and I also like the role of the dog. Your ending of them marching away with the refugees surprised me. Excellent writing here.

It was sad, never depressing. I felt the story was narrated in a subtle way; even so, this reader experienced strong emotions as I read through . Your story has deepened my love and appreciation for our military.
I really enjoyed the characters: the military dog, Lt. Silver and Lt. Lewinsky. Can I assume Lt. Lewinsky was killed?
This is a great contest entry!

CGB - Thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately he could have been captured and tortured or killed or both. None of which are happy endings. Sorry for the doom & gloom; but, it is hard for me to paint a beautiful picture of war. - Anonymous Author

I should not have asked that question. I'm sorry. Some stories are written as fiction, some as real life and some as a combo of fact and fiction. I should have trusted my gut instinct in believing this entire story actually happened.
My deepest, most sincere apologies. Please forgive me. I did not mean to sound insensitive.
You are a natural when it comes to writing.

Wet entertaining. Though officers might do this kind of work, I laughed because "you can't spell lost without Lt" is also a military maxim. I think you wrote this very well, and I enjoyed reading it!

Thank you for your kind words. Before I was commissioned, I didn't even know how to spell Lieutenant and then I were one. LOL - Anonymous Author

Of course there were a couple of conclusions one could draw from this, both a little unsavoury. His contact had been killed, or captured, or both, if he'd have been safe, he would have sent word, only the dog would know, beautifully written, I'm glad it wasn't the disguised old woman and her dog, well done, good story, blessings Roy
