I have been listening to the radio since I was a little child. Music is a powerful force in my life. It either enhances or creates moods for me.
I love many types. Your poem is very appealing, making use of many examples.

This is a very good poem about music and its power. Music can truly speak to a soul and can be healing as well. I play the piano, and enjoyed playing together with people who played other instruments.

Great imagery and visuals. These stood out:

Some songs can answer your prayers.
It can let you know God cares.
Music can soothe a child.
Some songs are soft and mild.

Best of luck in the contest; it should do well.

I thougHt the poem would do well in the contest. However, it finished in last place. Thanks for your kind words though.

I was very surprised you got no votes. This was an excellent poem in my opinion. Do you know that you can vote for your own work on FanStory? Yes, FanStory instituted this change a few years ago.

"Music", is an extremely well-written and delightfully descriptive piece. Penned with craft and skill. This talented poet's work was a pleasure to both read and review. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Just a (music) note to say, "Very nice work!" This is such a lovely piece. Music really is so many things in so many ways. I love hymns and country music, too!

Your poem is a great commentary on music, and a fitting entry for the contest. I love Southern Gospel music and I love the old classic hymns, there are so many truths in the words.

I appreciate your music reflections. Your last stanza made me smile especially "To some, music is just noise" because I was reading Psalm 98 today where verse 4 says, "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord." You're right that music is such a blessing - even our noises please the Lord.

Great material, and it shows your love of music. I'm a country music fan, myself. I still think your meter could be cleaned up a little. Good luck in the contest.

Sorry to hear that you were last. I'll bet if you clean up your meter. you will do better.

    How do I do that?

Most of the lines in this poem have three and a half feet of trochaic meter. An example would be your line ten:
    / - / - / - /
It can let you know God cares.

The diagonal represents a strong accent, and the dash represents a soft accent.

The next line struggles with meter:
    / - - / - /
    Music can soothe a child.

You can see that the meter is not the same. The next line also has a problem.
    - / - / - /
Some songs are soft and mild.

Here we have three iambic feet.

A couple of changes can make these lines have the same meter as the others. You might make the following changes:

Music wants to soothe a child.
And some songs are soft and mild.

Those are just quickies and probably there are better changes. I hope I haven't made you unhappy. That wasn't my intent.

Thanks, what other changes can I make to improve the meter?

I am going to try to rewrite this poem in iambic tetrameter.

Some music is a form of praise.
It helps us in so many ways.
Sometimes these songs can speak to
    you.
And they can help ease your pain too.

There are some songs that people
    play.
Those songs can take your blues
    away.
And they can open up your heart
And help dear friends when they're
    apart.

Some songs bring answers to your
    prayers.
They let you know our dear Lord
    cares.
    Some music soothes the troubled
    child.
And those songs are so soft and mild.

Some songs can be upbeat or slow.
There are so many songs I know.
I love God's hymns and country too.
So what does music mean to you?

Most music brings me joy, you see.
And some kids sing when they are
    three.
To some, good music is just noise.
    And sometimes music comes from
    toys.

The only thing I have done here is work with the meter. Please read this and notice how the words flow. Pay attention to the hard accents and the soft ones. That is the key. I hope this is helpful. It is meant to encourage. Keep at it.

This poem, Music, is a general send up to all forms and production of music which stimulates and entertains wherever it is heard.

This is an interesting poem. Music is important and it can do all of the things that you wrote about. While I find it can raise my spirits to the heavens over time I've learned that I have to be careful what I listen to.
Some music such as Bluegrass, Blues, even some Country can send me to the pits of despair. I love music and I can't imagine living without it as they now must do in Afghanistan. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

I so agree, music lifts our spirits and I have been a particular song recently, a remix of an old Elton John song, he sings with Dua Lipa. It is magical. I enjoyed your fine rhymes, such sweet music to my ears, love Dolly x
