    Nice to see you again!

The part about following directions and getting those results is true--as to the bass-ackward test results--I made sure to check which was which before making the eggs--the ten eggs I cooked were the good ones!

I have to give you six stars.

A). You are, as always, Very funny.

B.). No kidding. I made the same (which eggs sink) mistake myself early this summer!

I now buy six eggs at a time... 99% of the time they get eaten way before expiration date worries!

Yes, well perhaps you might have gotten better results if you were living in Australia ... I believe that where one's bath water swirls around in the opposite direction.

It sounds like you are cultivating your own antidote to disease in your fridge, by subjecting yourself to new varieties of germ warfare to build up resistance perhaps.
Your attitude to use-by dates is similar to mine - 'waste not, want not', but I was yelling at the screen while reading your item - no, no, no - when I saw you were discarding the sinkers. Bassackwards.

Oh ! Aren't you the soul of fanstory.!
We say that one should not put eggs directly into boiling water. WE put eggs in a vessel fill it with water .then put it on the stove .if the eggs are in the fridge and you put in hot water the shell would crack...
.I think you are pulling our legs.
But I loved it .especially your foraging for edible vegetation...What turn of words !

    Thankssssss!

I always used to start with cold water--several sources said to start with boiling water to make them easy to peel--next time back to cold water!

Too funny! Having learned about "best before dates" rather late in life, I have taken up mainly keeping an empty fridge (excepting beer, and possibly vodka which also have best before dates, if they make it that far, something I have yet to see) and cupboards. My enlightenment came following the trauma of almost "poisoning" a dear one with a 6 years' past best before date Ranch salad dressing. I will never make that mistake again.

Your easy-peel hardboiled eggs instruction from YouTube isn't the best though. Here's a better one:

1) Take a dozen eggs out of your ice-box
2) Place them in a stainless steel pot
3) Fill with just enough cold water to cover the largest egg
4) Put them on a high heat burner
5) When the water boils turn off the burner
6) Leave the eggs on the turned-off burner to cook for ten minutes
7) Tap-tap-tap peel without any problems.

I do so love cooking posts. :))

Even though this is fiction, I'm glad you found out the eggs were old before eating them. You did a great job setting up this scenario, Liz. I enjoyed reading it. I hate trying to peel eggs that won't--just lose big chunks as you try. Your image is perfect for this humorous little story.
Respectfully, Jan

Love your description of the "petrified forest" that is your refrigerator. That sounds like mine. Some foods are okay past their expiration date, but how long past? I don't think I'd trust eggs that have been around since July, even if they did pass your test. That's asking a lot of them. I wouldn't have tried it. I sometimes buy the already boiled eggs. Much easier. I've never found a good way to peel eggs. It helps if you let them cool off, though. Bon apetit! judi
