Thank you for this helpful guide to writing horror. Personally, I don't like horror so am not likely to read it or attempt to write it despite being told that horror and comedy are two sides of the same coin. I suppose the same technique you shared about connecting with commonalities with the reader applies with comedy as well.
Thanks also for remembering Dean and encouraging readers to read his works. I liked his poetry best.

Well written and needed. I have always wondered about horror stories but have been nervous about writing them. It is difficult from characters to plots. Thanks for this. I will check out Dean Kuch's portfolio.

The tjhing about characters is that, as with any genre, they are key to the reader's relatability of a story. if they behave like real people you can get away with almost anything no matter how outlandish.

It can be very cathartic to take those nightmares and put them on paper. it makes them more substantial to deal with in a way.

I don't really see it as a genre as horror is an emotional reaction to events and it takes place in almost any kind of story. It doesn't need to be about all those tropes.
My most horrific event in my life was shortly after my daughter was born and she got really sick. terrifying. she's okay now but it still haunts me from time to time.
I think it's a good exercise to try all types of writing.
